ORTHO PLUS - All ILFORD and Kentmere films are panchromatic with the exception of ORTHO PLUS which is an Orthochromatic film. This means it is blue and green sensitive but not red. Deeper oranges and reds will therefore appear dark and contrasty which can create some beautiful effects. Another unique characteristic of this film is that it can be processed using a dark red safelight which makes it ideal for those learning to load a spiral. The film is rated ISO 80 under daylight conditions but ISO 40 when shooting in Tungsten light. The film offers very fine grain and exceptional sharpness. Kentmere films

Ilford HP5 Plus 400 (35mm) Film Emulsion Review: Ilford HP5 Plus 400 (35mm)

I’m not sure what’s to be done about this “problem”, or even if it’s a product of my own imagination. At the very least, trying to dispel a few myths is a good place to start. Note: I metered for the petals of the lily at EI 1000 and developed the film for a little over a 1.5 stop push. The majority of our films break down into 2 distinct lines: The PLUS films (FP4 PLUS, HP5 PLUS and PAN F PLUS,) and the DELTA PROFESSIONAL films (DELTA 100, DELTA 400 and DELTA 3200). We should start by pointing out that there is no ‘wrong’ choice when it comes to ILFORD films. They are all fantastic, and your choice will boil down to a combination of personal preference (for example grain structure) and how/what you plan to shoot (speed and exposure latitude). DELTA PROFESSIONAL vs PLUS range comparison I’ve been developing at home with this film for three years straight, and have learned a lot about working with it to get the best results. This HP5 review is going to go over a number of development strategies that I’ve used to get great results. The chart below goes over the best developers for every situation you’ll encounter.

Ilford HP5+ at Adventurous ASAs - By Kieran Newman - 35mmc

Hi Preston, sorry for delay but I have no notification about this post… Anyway, I use 1:25 for normal processing, 1:100 for stand dev. Hope this can help! However, if you push- or pull-process your HP5+, it’ll likely become more sensitive to over- and under-exposures and require finer metering for best results. Kentmere films offer superb value for money and are a great starting point for students or anyone learning film photography, before stepping up to ILFORD films. A couple of other things worth noting before buying a film: I made 7x enlargements, and both were about the same density. They printed at the same time on the enlarger.Of all the problems I had with digital photography there was one that always got me; photograph in the dark looked like crap. Even with good full frame bodies, they still looked awful to me. Some people just prefer that more dramatic Daido Moriyama look. You can get contrast with HP5 Plus in the right light. You could push it – up to ISO 3200 according to Ilford – for more contrast too. But if you’re going to do that for the contrast alone, why not just buy a film with more contrast in the first place? As with Tri-X, HP5+’s grain is present, yet not overwhelming . It neither muddies the image nor takes away from fine detail. According to Ilford, the main difference between the two is that DELTA PROFESSIONAL films use a newer emulsion. This gives them the advantage of a lower grain-to-speed ratio (marginally cleaner, sharper look).
