About this deal

I know that this is a bit of a zombie post, but I would recommend adding something about how different cleaning materials might react with different pen materials (ammonia, isopropol alcohol, etc). Kaweco have been manufacturing pens and pencils in Germany since 1883. In the 1930s Kaweco created the Sport line of chunky hexagonal pens which became an enduring classic. The Kaweco brand is now in the hands of passionate pen people H & M Gutberlet and goes from strength to strength.

Finally, I smoothened the writing surface of the nib on increasing fine polishing pads (starting at 8000 then 10k and finally 12k). When writing with the pen I found its weight to be no problem at all. As I probably have average size male hands, I have to post the pen for anything exceeding just scribbling down a phone number or so. A substantial amount of the weight is in the cap so that the weight of then pen, when writing posted, rests against the hand and does not have to be moved around with the nib movements. Kaweco’s Brass Sport ballpoint pen is immediately recognizable with its characteristic octagonal shape, which was first introduced in 1935. It has the kind of charm that never goes out of style. The chunky yet elegant design is also practical, as the octagonal cross-section lets the pen sit flat on a table without rolling away. The Brass line becomes even better with age. The solid brass pens take on a unique, vintage character as they patina with time and handling. These weighty pens are even more substantial than aluminum Sports, but they are just as well balanced in the hand. Made from solid lead-free 'eco' brass, which is left untreated and uncoated, it weighs in at 36g which is more than most other pens currently available. The untreated finish means this pen will - like the Al-Sport Raw that came before it - wear over time and develop a unique patina depending on use and storage conditions. The finish can either be left to develop or can be restored using brass polish and a liberal application of elbow grease. It looks really good. On your last photo it looks quite shiny. Is there some sort of lacquer on the push knob? This lead holder is similar to the mechanical pencil, but it uses 3.2 mm lead that is ideal for sketching and drawing. The drop clutch mechanism releases the lead with a push of a button, and lets you choose what length of lead to have extended. The mechanical pencil shares its retractable design with the ballpoint pen. All the mechanical pencils are refillable with 0.7 mm lead.

If you like shiny, fresh and brand new looking then purhaps the Kaweco brass sport isn’t for you. This pen is meant to age and patina. Understanding that, another awesome Kaweco pen! The Brass Sport closely follows an original 1935 octagonal design. Super compact design, just 106mm long and 14mm in diameter. Lovely pen - gorgeous to hold and handle, with aesthetically pleasing patina developing, excellent and smooth nib... Just a lovely (hopefuly for like) fountain pen. The pen as expected feels very different from my other pens. While being compact it feels very substantial and robust.Sorry! I meant the Chinese pen maker's lacquer pen with the butterflies and inlays from the previous link. My first impression was that your poor ink flow was due to machining oils, I would have started by that first. Other than that, I agree that it is a substantial yet comfortable pen and it has a great design (IMHO much better than its clones). Mine has aged nicely, and I suspect it will still evolve its patina. That's another plus for me, the organic surface and that it is raw, not varnished as the clones gives -again IMHO- a distinctive feeling. I hope you like the patina yours may develop, but if you don't, you can always polish it.

After having investigated the options I could find for a travel pen, I decided that a Kaweco brass Sport with “M”-nib would likely be the right choice for me. I did not have the opportunity to physically try any of the pens in question and had therefore to rely on what I could find online. These crisp italic nibs are available in four sizes. You can use them for bold writing or edged calligraphy. The Kaweco Ebonit Sport is made from ebonite, one of the most popular materials for making fountain pens in the pre-plastic days of the early 20th century. Ebonite is a type of natural rubber, and it has a warm, luxurious feel in the hand unlike any other material. The 'raw' brass finish has no lacquer to wear off. Instead, the bare metal, like the pen's owner, will reflect the trials, tribulations and joys of a lifetime's work and play, with with the surface mellowing over time to a fine burnished patina unique to it's history.

It's a great pen, good weight, I find it nicer in the hand than the plastic Kaweco. I definitely feel it's worth the extra pennies.

Kaweco BRASS SPORT Ball Pen I Retractable Ballpoint Pen with

I very much like the look and feel of the brass and I also like the fact that the pen has a design that has been around for so long and probably can be called timeless. Small and portable, the Kaweco Brass Sport fountain pen is ideal when you are always "on-the-go". Mirrored on the design of the Classic Sport, the Brass Sport combines durable solid brass with Kaweco's signature simplicity, ensuring this pen will never go out of style. The chunky octagonal profile and substantial weight gives this pen a presence in the hand, making it a real joy to hold. Over time the raw brass will weather creating a truly unique finish, individual to yourself and your pen usage. Key FeaturesThanks for posting your opinion, it is always good to know, and the more opinions one can find, the better for making up one's mind. I knew the Kaweco would be much heavier than the other pens I have and was curious how I would like that. Also, I had noticed that several users/reviewers of the Kaweco Sport series pen had mentioned that the nibs are a bit hit or miss, some a great out of the box, others not so much. As the nibs are cheap and easily replaceable, I was willing to risk to get a bad one. the joy of an inexpensive pen with a broad or stub nib: shimmering inks, sheening inks, no fear of ruining something super collectable/rare/vintage
