Female friendship is still all too rare in YA, and this book has it in spades. Each chapter is filled with girls supporting, laughing, debating, and learning from each-other. I especially appreciated how Vivian’s friendship with Claudia wasn’t dismissed just because she also befriends the new girl, Lucie. Girls of different races, orientations, classes and walks-of-life not only work together, but revel in their friendships. My English teacher, Mr. Davies, rubs a hand over his military buzz cut. There’s sweat beading at his hairline, and he puffs out his ruddy cheeks. He looks like a drunk porcupine. You can always play the bump ’n’ grab game with me, if that helps,” Seth says, and the tiny part of me that wishes he wouldn’t make a joke of it disappears as soon as we press our lips together.” Lucy takes in a sharp breath. “Wait, what did you just say?” she asks, turning in her seat, her dark eyes wide with surprise. And if you upgrade to the VIP MicroBook Mega, you get two 1-2-1 calls with me. You can use your first one right away and I’ll help you figure out which idea you want to start with. I have an idea for my MicroBook, but haven’t started it yet. Is the course right for me?

Fleming, Mike Jr. (February 20, 2019). "Amy Poehler To Direct 'Moxie' At Netflix; Riot Grrrl-Inspired Teen Starts Feminist Revolution At Her High School". Deadline Hollywood. Archived from the original on February 20, 2019 . Retrieved October 29, 2019. It’s for people who long to write a book but feel overwhelmed at the idea of writing a weighty tome (I hear ya!) — or who want to deliver a short, sweet idea with a bang. A MicroBook can be the perfect option for you. It's revealed that a girl has been raped. School officials allow boys at the high school to "bump and grab" girls in the hallways. In the past, boys have taken photos up girls' skirts and posted them on the internet. A March Madness kind of competition is held each year to find the "Most F--kable" girl in the junior or senior class. I kind of love how unapologetically feminist this book is. The author touches on a lot of different feminist topics, and even mentions how those topics intersect with lgbt issues and with racism. I was expecting the book to be very one-dimensional dealing with those topics. But this book was better than that. There are characters who do sexist things despite trying their best, other characters call them out, and they grow and change. Yay for second chances and character development. I have to say, I would've appreciate a bit more actual intersectionality, rather than characters just talking about it. But in general, that aspect of the book was great. Enrol early. The sooner you enrol, the better prepared you’ll be. I send out plenty of resources before and during onboarding week to help you get ready. Really all it is, is girls supporting each other and wanting to be treated like human beings in a world that's finding ways to tell them they're not.

It said girls are a revolutionary soul force that can change the world for real. My chest feels heavy with something that feels scary and good at the same time.” This novel is full of wit, insight, and moxie. . . . Highly recommended for all teens, but especially those who would enjoy realistic coming-of-age fiction with female empowerment." — School Library Journal, starred review As part of onboarding week, you’ll dig into your reasons for writing, and figure out which idea is best for you right now — then we’ll get you writing and finishing it, so you can move onto the next MicroBook idea! A book’s impact is forever, and The Fear is fleeting—you’re not gonna arrive at the end of this life-game with your hair on fire knowing you let a fleeting fear stop you speaking up, are you? Moxie is unashamedly feminist, but also takes a look at high school culture in small towns with a football obsession, and at how some men behave. I enjoyed it and remember coming out of it feeling empowered and like I need to do more. I am always striving to be a better feminist and this really brought out that side of me.

Some girls are dancing in the corners, moving their bodies with the freedom that comes when no boy is watching you.” I don’t know if you could really get it,” I say, sighing. “Not until someone plays the bump ’n’ grab game with you.” Break the Fall by Jennifer Iacopelli – a gymnastics book!!!! It also looks at sexual assault within that world as well as what happens when you come forward to report it. After Mitchell wins an athletic scholarship over the girls' favorite candidate, Kiera, Vivian walks home feeling depressed, drinking a bottle of champagne along the way. She comes home to find Lisa with her boyfriend John, and is annoyed that her mother kept the relationship a secret from her. Vivian then throws up.

My favorite things include chocolate, pepperoni pizza, and this super hilarious 1980s sitcom about four retired women called The Golden Girls. I can basically quote every episode. I would like to add a trigger warning for a lot of gross things being said about rape victims, which are called out, obviously. Lucy?” he says, calling on the new girl, Lucy Hernandez, who’s had her hand up since he asked the question. He stares at her blankly and waits. Head cheerleader Emma comes forward as the rape survivor, stating that Mitchell, her ex-boyfriend, was her rapist. It happened the previous year when they were dating, and they called her "Most Bangable", which left her mortified. All the students are horrified and lend their support. Principal Shelly overhears and plans to punish Mitchell at last. Seth had been disappointed with Vivian for taking out her frustrations on him, her mother, and her mother's beau. After the club was unsuccessful in helping Kiera win the athletic scholarship over Mitchell, Vivian became belligerent with the people she cared for most. Seth declared that since he'd always been fully supportive of her efforts, he didn't deserve to be treated that way. He was even concerned that he'd misjudged her character. However, after the walkout, Seth makes a gesture that indicates all is well between them again: He reveals that he has written Vivian's name on his arm as a wink to something she'd said during their prior argument.

Well,” Lucy starts, and you can tell she’s excited to get going, even sitting up a little straighter in her chair, “if you think about the reference the speaker makes in line 8, what I’m wondering is if the light doesn’t indicate, a, um, what would you call it … like a shift in the speaker’s understanding of…” No. I can certainly point you in the right direction for resources and professionals who may be able to help you, but this course is all about getting your MicroBook written and publishing it yourself.

It’s like I’m living in a feminist fantasy,” Lucy says. “But it can’t be a complete fantasy because Roxane Gay isn’t here.” A guy who repeatedly yells to you "Make me a sandwich!" and wears a t-shirt with the words "Nice legs, when do they open"? is: When Viv first starts creating the Moxie 'zines and working towards dismantling the school's patriarchal system, she's so gung-ho about it that she tends to fly off the handle whenever anyone says anything incorrect. I think a lot of feminists have been in her shoes (I know I have, and it took me a few years to learn that I don't have to get angry at every person who hasn't been educated). INTERSECTIONALITY! Vivian is given a firsthand lesson in the problematic aspects of "white feminism" and learns how to take the extra steps needed to ensure complete inclusion of all women (not just the white girls).
