The MSI Katana GF66 12UGS is a laptop with a balanced price-performance ratio, delivering a fairly affordable entry into the top class of mobile gaming. I spent the most time in Battlefield V, testing various graphics settings and even bouncing between performance modes provided by MSI.

Whenever a gaming laptop lands on my desk, and it's a true gaming laptop, not one of those super thin portable wannabes, I try to guess whether the manufacturer prioritized battery life over performance or vice-versa. With the GF66, I assumed it would be battery life. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 54% of all devices are better. With the game set to Ultra, performance dropped to 79fps. If I set the GF66's performance setting to Balanced. The frame rate took an additional 10% hit, dropping down to 71fps. None of those numbers come close to the speed of the display on the GF66, but they're also nothing to get upset about. I didn't notice any tearing, hiccups or any other performance issues that made the GF66 a boring gaming experience. In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 33.9 °C / 93 F, compared to the device average of 33.9 °C / 93 F.

In principle, the MSI Katana GF66 can be opened fairly easily. There are 12 PH1 screws that fasten the bottom cover to the base unit. After removing them, you can then go around the gap around the cover with a plastic prying tool to get access to the insides. We therefore cannot offer you any views into the insides of our test unit.But peeking through the large fan vents, we can still take some guesses. On paper, the MSI Katana GF66 12 UGS looks like a very powerful gaming laptop. A 144-Hz display, an Intel Core i7-12700H, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti belong to the equipment that any gamer likes to see in a laptop. But unfortunately, things aren't that easy, and the elegant gaming laptop has both some strengths and weaknesses. The matte 144-Hz display panel with a Full HD resolution shows quite good response times. And at 321 cd/m², the display is also fairly bright. However, larger halos can form in some image areas that are also clearly noticeable during some dark image sequences. In our test unit, the bright spots are concentrated on the right side of the display.Thanks to the smart performance control, you basically don't really need to configure anything manually in the MSI Katana GF66. In this performance mode, the laptop automatically switches to one of the preinstalled modes between Silent and Extreme Performance.
