Description

Users experiencing toothaches, or who have sensitive teeth may find comfort in knowing that myrrh is good for that as well. Myrrh will fight a toothache and help you heal while it soothes you. The benefits of having this miracle of nature in your toothpaste are virtually endless. It’s recorded use has been around for a really long time, it works like expensive medicine (and yet is cheap), can be found almost anywhere, and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Myrrh is mentioned in the New Testament as one of the three gifts (with gold and frankincense) that the magi "from the East" presented to the Christ Child ( Matthew 2:11). Myrrh was also present at Jesus' death and burial. Jesus was offered wine and myrrh at his crucifixion ( Mark 15:23). According to John's Gospel, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea brought a 100-pound mixture of myrrh and aloes to wrap Jesus' body ( John 19:39). The Gospel of Matthew relates that as Jesus went to the cross, he was given vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink (Matthew 27:34); the Gospel of Mark describes the drink as wine mingled with myrrh (Mark 15:23). In Ancient Egypt, myrrh was used to treat hay fever and herpes. The ancient Greeks used it as an antiseptic for soldiers to clean up battle wounds, and myrrh was commonly carried into the battlefield.

Bark yields a fragrant resin used as flavoring fir sweets, baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, and desserts.

But what exactly are the benefits of myrrh? Here's what recent research has to say:

In the bible, it was related that Christ was given myrrh at birth. Thus, it was rated higher costing much more than gold. The greatest of all medieval clinicians, al-Razi, a Muslim physician, used myrrh to treat diseases of the kidneys and bladder, and to dissipate swellings in the stomach. Another study noted that myrrh and other essential oils applied via baths helped mothers heal skin wounds from vaginal deliveries ( 19).

In 2017, scientists published results suggesting that frankincense and myrrh might help relieve neuropathic pain, following positive results when treating pain in mice with a water extraction of frankincense and myrrh. Rheumatoid arthritis If you have systemic inflammation, use myrrh with caution, since it might make this condition worse. This section is for tincturing ‘light’ material, such as leaves and flowers. For heavier parts, such as roots, seeds and barks, please see the next section. For instance, resins are poorly extracted in water but are extracted well in high percentages of alcohol. E.g. Frankincense and myrrh resin ( Commiphora spp.) would be extracted in up to 90% alcohol. Tannins and mucilages another chemical are extracted well in lower alcohol percentage such as 30 or 40%. In one test-tube study, myrrh oil at a low dilution of 0.1% killed all dormant Lyme disease bacteria, which can persist in some people after antibiotic treatment and continue to cause illness ( 11).
