About this deal

Initially I hooked the straps onto my handlebars, but felt more confident riding when I hooked them onto my hands instead. Pier, on the other hand, rarely bothers to wear the hood part of his rain cape. So why does he like the Cleverhood better? Because it’s shorter (the one-size People’s Poncho hangs longer than he’d like) and lighter (it takes up less space when traveling). Urbane was selling the Brooks rain cape, but we didn’t like it, so we headed to The Spacing Store to try on the Cleverhoods. (Note: Urbane now sells AGU rain ponchos that look pretty good, but we haven’t tried those yet.)

Essentially, you need a size that fits you. If you go for a ‘one-size’ poncho, choose something with adjustable fitting features. If you have a particularly small or large frame, you might be better off choosing a brand with different size options.Although I have all the gear from a raincoat, to waterproof pants; gaiters to brollies, sometimes you simply need something easy for the rainiest of days. And something which doesn’t look too out of place in the city. I will admit that gaiters are a strange look when wandering around central Manchester – even when they are needed on a very flooded Market Street! When we say ponchos and capes, we’re not referring to the thin bin liners you get at the theme parks, we mean quality made cycle specific ones – there is a difference. Investing in a good quality cycling rain cape/poncho is ideal to see you through the wet season. You don’t have to worry about changing into or out of anything, you can simply pop them over your existing cycle clothing to ensure that you are kept bone dry. The only downside of the People’s Poncho is the cost. It’s not the cheapest way to keep yourself dry while cycling, but in my opinion its benefits are worth the extra money. It’s easy to fold away into your bag, or rolled up into it’s own pouch and attached to your bike. The cape is constructed from extremely light PA fabric which is waterproof up to 10,000 mmH20. The hood is adjustable to accommodate your helmet, and the magnetic tapes are fitted so you can connect to the handlebars.

They’re not great for extreme weather. The baggy fit means they flap in the wind. Apart from being irritating, if it’s very windy it’s likely that rain will be blown underneath and you’ll be soaked. You might also feel like you’re going to take off. So, imagine wearing something light, breathable, totally rainproof and suitable for cold and warm weather alike. That’s where the waterproof poncho comes in. Also known as a rain cape, this is a loose-fitting piece of waterproof fabric with a hood that protects most of your body from the rain.A traditional poncho won’t keep your arms protected while you hold onto a bike’s handlebars. Cycling rain capes are created to keep even your arms and hands dry when you reach for the handlebars. Brooks England is primarily known for their saddle, but they’ve branched out to make this trendy rain cape. If style is your priority, then this cape is for you.

It will last longer than other cheaper brands, actually does it’s job, and you look good. What really sold me on this poncho is that I can use it not only for cycling, but on other rainy adventures.

Is the People’s Poncho worth it?

At lower speeds or moderate winds this cape works fine and will stay connected to the handlebars. The issue is when you’re going fast or the winds are gusty. The magnetic strips will come undone, and your cape will blow with the wind. Make sure any cape you have has a feature to keep it from turning into a sail in the wind. You may not care about looking like a superhero, but you’ll feel the extra drag. More rain protection. The poncho covers your thighs, keeping (most of) your legs dry. If you opt for a longer one that covers your handlebars, your hands and arms will stay dry too (providing there’s a way of attaching it to you or the bike). Straps for Cycling –Under the poncho there’s two straps that you can grab while holding the handlebars. This creates a small canopy to protect your legs from getting wet. A simple concept, but works really well. They also have a strap that can cinch around your waist to keep the poncho covering your torso. Without this, windy weather would turn your poncho into a superhero cape and you’d get soaking wet. These handlebar and waist straps are what sets this poncho apart from other “cycling ponchos.” Available in a variety of lengths, widths, colours and designs, you can be sure to find something suitable for keeping your body dry during those unexpected showers.

Material– The People’s Poncho started out waterproof, with water beading off the fabric, but now not so much. Maybe this is because its waterproofness relies on a TPU coating and now that coating is wearing off? Two hours cycling and Pier’s coat is wet under The People’s Poncho. CleverZipster – Pros & Cons I only buy things I really need and have the criteria that they must be multi-functional and long-lasting. I have so far found that The People’s Poncho fits the bill. It’s not ergonomically designed for cycling (the way some of the other capes on this list are). So, you can also use it hiking or camping.Their Octavia Rain Cape has a pretty unique look to it because of its translucent All Weather Shell stretch fabric. The fabric is very lightweight, breathable and it doesn’t restrict your movement on the bike. It’s also great for shielding you from the wind.
