As of 2018, Ross lives with her husband and two children in Northumberland. [17] Philanthropy [ edit ] Ross took a leap of faith when she became a writer. She had to give up a career that paid rather well to get her books out, and her husband was more than happy to support her choices in this area. L. J. Ross (Author), Tom Bateman (Narrator), Bertie Carvel (Narrator), Hermione Norris (Narrator), Kevin Whately (Narrator), Audible Originals (Publisher) & However, Ryan is no genius. L.J. Ross chooses to not burden him with some extraordinary gift which allows him to better solve crimes. While such abilities tend to set the heroes of most crime fiction series apart, the fact that Ryan is sometimes presented as just another Detective Chief Inspector who just happens to work really hard once he catches the scent of a case allows the DCI Ryan series to stand out.

I have listened to all of the DC Ryan books on audible and each time I finish one I can’t wait to listen to the next one. I think they are very well written and the stories are very well balanced. I do hope there are going to be some more. Reply In 2021, Ross set up the Northern Photography Prize for images captured in the North East of England, [18] as well as reading and writing challenges and prizes for adults and children. [19] Novels [ edit ] DCI Ryan Mysteries Series [ edit ] This book is a prequel to all the rest, and I knew how it would end, that didn't detract from the story. For anyone new to Ryan this would be a great place to start, and the story ends where Holy Island begins - and you will fall in love with Ryan!. For anyone who has read the other DCI Ryan books this is a must-listen. The DCI Ryan books delve into the history of North East England, using local myths, legends and cults to drum up plots. While the books have been advertised as intense thrillers, they are hardly the darkest psychological dramas in the world. And the killers in the DCI Ryan series are hardly the most brutal and depraved in the crime fiction genre. It is worth noting that while the DCI Ryan books are a series featuring recurring characters like DCI Ryan, his girlfriend Anna Taylor and veteran DS Frank Phillips, many of the novels can be read as standalones. Thinking of a creative venture that would take her away from her job, she fell pregnant with her son. Motherhood was a very exciting prospect for L.J. Ross, though she was still unsatisfied with her career that would not give her the flexibility she desired to have as a mother. I am not sure about this book! I found it clichéd and written by someone who wanted to squeeze in facts about Newcastle. A little confession is that I sometimes use Audible books to help me drift into sleep after a busy shift at the hospital. But no sleep with this one! The set up was so interesting and the characters and performances especially the Northumberland accents grabbed my attention immediately so I sacrificed my slumbers and had to listen. I was surprised by some of the description of the torture scenes but this made the excellent dramatisation by Michael Eaton remain true to the book and allowed me insight into the serial killer’s modus operandi. In the stifling summer heat of 2014, a killer has been stalking the streets of Newcastle causing city-wide panic. When the officer in charge of the case turns up dead, it falls upon Detective Chief Inspector Ryan to take up the baton and find the person responsible.

But no matter the production (which was epic) if the storyline was rubbish then what is the point. But guess what….it was NOT rubbish, yup you got it, word of the post, it was EPIC! book 11 – The infirmary is a prequel which on the book list says “Chronologically, The Infirmary is a prequel to the series and should be read first”. Set on the historic Holy Island otherwise known as Lindisfarne, “Holy Island” is a gripping novel that introduces Detective Chief Inspector Ryan. Ryan has retreated to Holy Island to recover from a tragic case that had a particularly bad effect on his psyche. A few days into his sabbatical, the tranquility is broken when the body of a young woman is discovered abandoned on the ruins of the nearby monastery buildings. ABOUT LJ ROSS

I also liked seeing how Ryan’s relationship with Phillips started and I was pleased to see they’ve always got on well. Ross met her husband during her college years. It was during the months following the birth of her son that Ross began writing her first book. After visiting Lindisfarne, the author was so thoroughly impressed by the atmosphere of the Island that she couldn’t believe no one had written a crime thriller set on the location. It wasn’t long before the author’s wondering mind drove her to produce the draft for ‘Holy Island’ in 2015. The Infirmary is a brilliant production. Tom Bateman as Ryan and Kevin Whately as Frank Phillips are perfectly cast and capture the nuances of the characters superbly. Mark Bazeley—the killer, Bertie Carvel—the killer’s inner dialogue, both of whom are enough to make the blood run cold. Hermione Norris as the narrator, and the rest of the cast are all excellent and bring the story to life. The suspense is palpable and the pace is just right throughout. And, although the story is harrowing with the most terrifying and brutal villain, much is left to the imagination.
