Did you know that the new King of Britain, King Charles III, has a deep love for books? So much so that he has authored a few books in different genres including a children's book for young readers! A malt-whisky distillery located near the Balmoral estate on the south side of the River Dee produces the Royal Lochnagar Single Malt whisky. Due to its location on the Balmoral estate the mountain has many royal links, and Queen Victoria climbed to the summit in 1848. [8] In the film Mrs. Brown, John Brown and Benjamin Disraeli hike up Lochnagar to discuss the need for the Queen to return to active involvement with government. It is also the setting for a children's story, The Old Man of Lochnagar, originally told by Prince Charles. In 2023, a recessional tune entitled The Call of Lochnagar was composed for the service at which Charles III was presented the Honours of Scotland. [17] [18]

I thoroughly enjoyed directing the production, which proved an excellent vehicle for the entire Whirligig team, particularly Susie Caulcutt, the designer, Sheila Falconer, the choreographer (a Scottish lady!) and Peter Pontzen, the musical supervisor (married to a Scottish lady!). Donald Bennett, ed. (1985). The Munros, SMC Hillwalkers' Guide. Scottish Mountaineering Trust. p.122. ISBN 0-907521-13-4. The story is about an old man of who lives in a cave near Loch Lochnagar (which is close to Balmoral, where the British Royal family have their favourite Summer home). The old man loves living alone out in the wild countryside and has many strange and wonderful friends including the underwater Loch King lagopus Scoticus, the little Gorm people who live in cairns, and his tame bird friends such as the capercaillie who pull his flying carriage, Skean and Dhu his fishing ospreys and a pair of stags who pull his winter sledge. The poet Lord Byron spent time in the area in his youth, [19] and wrote the poem, Lachin y Gair (also known as Dark Lochnagar), which also forms the basis of a song which would eventually be composed by Beethoven.

magical, indeed, is the key word in THE OLD MAN OF LOCHNAGAR, which appeals to, and delights, the child in all of us with its lovely amalgam of fantasy, comedy, puppetry, dance, acrobatics and much else.” Lochnagar or Beinn Chìochan is a mountain in the Mounth, in the Grampians of Scotland. It is about five miles (eight kilometres) south of the River Dee near Balmoral. It is a popular hill with hillwalkers, and is a noted venue for summer and winter climbing. The Old Man of Lochnagar is a children's book written by Charles, Prince of Wales, and illustrated by Sir Hugh Casson. The story revolves around an old man who lives in a cave in the cliffs surrounding the corrie loch under the Lochnagar, a mountain which overlooks the royal estate at Balmoral in Scotland where the Royal Family spend much of their summer holidays. Lochnagar's summit experiences an Alpine Tundra Climate, with freezing, snowy winters and cool summers. The nearest UK Met Office weather station is at Braemar 6 + 1⁄ 2 miles (10 kilometres) northwest. The yearly temperature range is usually between −6.6 and 9.4°C (20.1 and 48.9°F). January has the highest average frosts, despite February nights being colder; January has an average of 26.9 frost days, compared with 24.3 in February. There is the risk of a frost at any time of the year, even in July and August, when each month averages 1 air frost every 10 years. David Wood, who set it to music, also directs – and creates a show of enormous charm, delight, visual surprise and zany humour, bound gently together by his cheerful, ebullient and tuneful score … The story of the old man of Lochnagar was one Prince Charles had told some years earlier to entertain his brothers, Andrew and Edward, when they were young. The book was published in 1980 in aid of The Prince's Trust charity.
