Characters shifted without an introduction and many times it was difficult to discern who was saying what. Born in Australia in November 1960, Michael Robotham grew up in small country towns that had more dogs than people and more flies than dogs. He escaped in 1979 and became a cadet journalist on an afternoon newspaper in Sydney. For the next fourteen years he wrote for newspapers and magazines in Australia, Britain and America. As a senior feature writer for the UK’s Mail on Sunday he was among the first people to view the letters and diaries of Czar Nicholas II and his wife Empress Alexandra, unearthed in the Moscow State Archives in 1991. He also gained access to Stalin’s Hitler files, which had been missing for nearly fifty years until a cleaner stumbled upon a cardboard box that had been misplaced and misfiled. Eleanor was married to Richard Anderson for 38 years, they have two adult children together, a home….a life. Richard let on that his work took him overseas to the Middle East, when in fact he was just going a few towns over to be with his other wife and family. Four years before his death, he married Claire Anderson, and they had two toddler age children together. Yes it is a bit slow moving as it sets the scene but that makes it all the more convincing and you are left with so many questions. I feel bad...but the poor child who played the son was cute but not enough to pull off having no tangible talent.

This is the first novel I've read by Kathleen Irene Paterka but now I am on the hunt to find her earlier books! Holy cow! Kathleen grabbed me from the very beginning and never let me go. At first my heart was breaking for Eleanor but as I kept reading I soon saw Claire as a victim as well. Their story is heartbreaking and could be taken right out of the newspapers today. A man who decides one family isn't enough to keep him satisfied so he starts a second family. Eleanor has been married to Richard for 38 years. Of course, the excitement of the first years is gone but they have a good, solid marriage, two adult children and a grand kid, enough money not to worry, no special health problems. A good life. That is what she thinks waking up one morning, looking at his dear face. She looks again -something is wrong, very wrong. Richard died in his sleep and she will walk into a complete nightmare, unraveling her life, making her question everything she held for true.

It is kinda sad. The basic story had promise but was destroyed by a bad director and producers that tried to turn it into something it isn't. I suspect that in the book, Rebeca Kendall (her character) is meant to be a dignified woman, calm and collected. Sadly, Worner's Rebeca comes across emotionally stunted instead, and that's only if you decide to force yourself to see her monotonous droning as realistic, and try to figure out what sort of state a human being must be in to behave like that. (Worner looks and sounds the same whether Rebeca's giving advice to her daughters, flirting with her husband, mourning his death, OR raging at his infidelity). Even if Rosamunde Pilcher did write the character as incapable of expressing emotion (it's quite possible), what's the excuse for what amounts to over 80% of the rest of the cast? William and Mary have been married sixty years. William is a celebrated surgeon, Mary a devoted wife. Both are strong believers in right and wrong. So, if you need to do the dishes or do some work on the computer, this is the very mini-series to do it to. You won't miss you and can easily catch upon what's happening in a New York second.I had actually never heard of this book and only came across it by chance when I was looking at free ebooks on kindle unlimited, and it was a pleasant surprise! When Joe O’Loughlin receives the call that his father, William, is in hospital in an induced coma, he has no idea that his life as he knows it is about to change forever – and not because of his father’s condition. The Other Wife is a bit of a slow burn. Ms. McGowan sets the scene thoroughly for this domestic thriller, and her character development is utterly devious. Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. I feel that I must mention there is an element of spousal abuse in this book, so if this is a problem for you, steer clear of this book. This is a two parter and this review is based on the first part. I'll watch part two just to see how this plays out. But I think I know.

Review: The Other Wife by Michael Robotham - Booktopia Review: The Other Wife by Michael Robotham - Booktopia

I really enjoyed this book. It is not a thriller, nor a love story, not an urban fantasy or a ya coming of age. It is just a greatly written story about the wrong person to love and the possible consequences. After Eleanor finds Richard dead, problems arise. Their insurance agent discovers he had given his policy to another woman...named Claire Anderson. The characters of this book were great and the plot was good too. It moved a tad bit slow from what I like, but the story and twists were really good. There seemed to be a lot of chapters on Suzie and Nora too, Elle had a smaller share and I'd have loved to know more about the incidents from her past and what shaped her to be the person she was. The ending was fantastic. But there too, I'd have loved to more about how it came to be. And then out of the blue, a woman named Nora rents the cottage next to Suzi’s. Finally, Suzi doesn’t feel so alone. Suzi hopes that she can find a confidant in Nora, but what she doesn’t know is Nora already knows all of Suzi’s secrets and she is planning to use them against her…Claire is an absolutely fantastic author. She had me on the edge of my seat, desperate to keep reading, not wanting to put the book down. There's little twists spreaded the whole way through, getting bigger until they lead to the main. I absolutely loved it. This book is very much about the father Joe realises he didn’t know at all. And there’s something rather sad about that… Her husband's work took him away from his home for weeks at a time and sometimes even longer. And even though they had been married for 38 years, there spark had gone away a long time ago. Richard well he was a fantastic provider for the family so Eleanor never really had anything at all to worry about. She had quit her job as a teacher years ago right after her children were born. Richard had promised her that he would take care of her. But thinking over it now, in all honestly you can’t completely blame her. Maybe she should have been more careful, and read the forms Richard put in front of her, but they’d behaved in that sort of fashion for the majority of their marriage. Was she not to trust Richard? It would have been more prudent to pay attention to something as large as mortgaging their house, but she was born in very much a “man’s world” and really, if he wasn’t having a proper relationship with Claire, he could have hidden an affair much easier. One that meant nothing. At first Nora seems capable, practical and strong, just the sort of woman who can be trusted. She's got secrets of her own, however, secrets that have stayed hidden since her childhood. And then there's Elle, the ex-concert pianist whose beauty has faded as thoroughly as her musical career. She spends most of her time as a prisoner in her beautiful home, doing her best to look attractive when her hard-working husband finally walks through the front door every night.

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you. Without giving too much away, I will say there were a couple times during this book that the suspense was killing me! Soon after Eleanor's family finds that he had given away almost all their money to another woman, the story gets very exciting. They find out Richard married another woman four years ago, and neither woman had any idea. The concept of this is so crazy that it had me hooked instantly. However, I thought the amount of internal struggle was a little too much. There were too many questions being asked in the character's heads. Some people may enjoy this, but for me it became somewhat dull. As my four star rating says, I definitely recommend it to friends – Mum also read it and really enjoyed it. The German actress playing Gemma (the younger daughter) clearly put a lot of effort into the accent. Sadly she overdid it, so more often than not, its preciousness was grating. Natalia Worner did a better job in that regard (and I can't fault a German actress playing a German character for sounding German once in a while). The thing is, acting that's so profoundly dead simply wouldn't allow for any preciousness.I also have something I need to get off my chest...I loathed Suzi's character. She was a thoughtless, vaguely ignorant airhead, who couldn't responsibly care for a dog. As a mom of four dogs myself, I found her character to be incredibly abhorrent.
