Description

This was a buddy read with Ms. Kaceey! We really enjoyed discussing the premise of this one and think all of you will too.

THE PASSENGERS | Kirkus Reviews

Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. Another savagely clever near future thriller' - Cara Hunter, bestselling author of Close to Home.Don't misunderstand I thought the premise, of an Orwellian society with driverless cars, was brilliant. Likewise, the motivation for revenge, yet, the act itself was misplaced and unjustifiable IMO. In comparison, consider Marrs' other book The One (which I loved) wherein the motivation and justification for Matthew's revenge was without question. It just made sense and the punishment for Ellie's complicity matched the crime. The author wrote this impressive book in one month in 1938, when he was just twenty-three. This novel was recently discovered and edited. The author lived a short life and he also had to move from one county to another with his mother before being interred on the Isle of Man as "enemy aliens." He as then deported to Australia in 1940 and was permitted to return to England in 1942 but the boat he was on was torpedoed by a German Submarine. He was 27 years old.

The Passengers: A near-future thriller with a killer twist

Tai knyga, supurtanti iki sielos gelmiu. Vardan istorinio teisingumo sios knygos tiesiog negalima pamirsti. The Passengers takes place 10 years or so in the future, not long after fully self-driving vehicles have become ubiquitous and the British government moves to phase out the barbaric, deadly practice of human driving. It follows the stories of five of those passengers (the other three are soon blown up) as well as that of Libby Dixon, a young everywoman who is serving her week on the ultra-secretive Vehicle Inquest Jury. This panel—made up of the head of the Ministry for Transport, representatives of the General Medical Council and Legal Services Board, a “Religious Pluralist” representing all faiths, and a rotating member of the public—is charged with reviewing crashes in which an autonomous vehicle kills someone and determining whether the vehicle or the victim is to blame. Except, as Dixon learns, they don’t like the v-word: “There are no victims here unless we judge they have been unlawfully killed,” says the transportation chief, who slides from jerk to villain as the plot moves along. The fear is real my friends. “The Passengers” will scare you. Yea, “The Jetsons” made the idea of a futuristic car look cute, “The Passengers,” not so much. They each receive this message: “ It May Have Come to Your Attention that your vehicle is no longer under your management. From here on in, I am in charge of your destination. The ONLY thing you need to know, is that in two hours and thirty minutes, it is highly likely that you will be dead.”Otto’s life - as with many Jews - were living in constant chronic fear —-DAY TO DAY feeling THREATENED —- NON-STOP HORRIFIC FEAR.
