UM690: Up to three monitors can be connected at the same time with a maximum resolution of two 4K@60Hz plus one 8K@60Hz. The ultra-compact desktop PC UM690 is powered by a Ryzen 9 6900HX processor. It is a high-end model of the UM590 introduced in an October 20 press release, and the CPU has been updated from Ryzen 9 5900HX to Ryzen 9 6900HX.

Just days after introducing the MINISFORUM UM590 compact desktop computer with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, MINISFORUM has unveiled a new UM690 variant with a faster processor, better graphics, speedier RAM and faster USB connectivity.

The two HDMI ports support dual displays up to 4K 60Hz or you can use the USB 4 Type-C with appropriate adaptor output for a single 8K 60Hz display. The USB 4 port found on the front of the UM690 can also be connected to an external GPU ( eGPU) for even faster graphics performance! There are also 4 USB 3.2 generation 2 ports, and one additional USB 3.2 generation 2 Type-C port for connecting peripherals to the Ryzen mini PC. Cooling: temps stay reasonable even during resource intensive tasks, and the fans are relatively quiet. Minisforum has already launched several AMD Ryzen 5000 APU-powered Mini PCs including the EliteMini X500, the Elitemini HX90, the UM590, and the DeskMini HM90. So now the company has decided to shift gears and focus on the Ryzen 6000 series. There's also the Ryzen 7000 products that will be heading out later this year as supply gets better. Once again, the UM690 aims to offer the best-in-class Mini PC performance utilizing AMD's latest hardware.

The sata drive went in easy but never liked the small pug with white dot on need some form of what way round it fits ok if you have good eye sight the white dot faced away from the WiFi chip. There's not much to a mini case so I would think it should be fairly easy to make a cost effective protective shell that's nice to look at. Mine arrived with some permanent scratches across the top so off to a bad start. Then getting inside to add a drive I had to very carefully pry and peel off a glued-in plastic plate piece that's only purpose is to cover the screws for the actual bottom plate. Not a horrible experience but unnecessary in my opinion. I’ve been holding off a review ever since I got it so I can spend as much time possible with it before giving it a review. I’ve gotta say, I love it. I had a custom build pc with a i9 and a 3080ti and I downgraded to a smaller machine to make my setup cleaner and I am very very happy with it. Something to note is they say HDMI can do 4k60 but with a HDMI 2.1 cable I get 144hz out of my 4k resolution. This machine is VERY quiet by the way. Also, do they list what the TDP limit is for the 6900HX in this box? I'm reading performance scales pretty severely with power, up to 20% higher GPU performance going from 25W to 50W

Our review sample of the UM690 comes with a 512 GB Kingston SSD. We have already seen the same model used in the Minisforum Neptune Series NAD9. The drive performs similarly well in the UM690 and is faster than the storage solutions in the rest of the comparison devices. However, the Kingston drive exhibited the same weaknesses under sustained load. The small heatsink isn't enough keep the drive's performance constant over an extended period. The Minisforum UM690 can also be fitted with an extra 2.5" storage drive; the required cable is included in the box. Each piece of hardware has passed a strict quality inspection and met the factory's standards before it is delivered to Minisforum. In addition, there is no difference in the warranty policies of these hardware suppliers. The Minisforum UM690 has all the power of a standard desktop found in a compact Ryzen mini PC form factor. If there was a way to add a dGPU to this, it would win me over. That’s what I foresee as the big upgrade for this system in the future. It only has an m.2 port, it doesn’t have a Pcie Slot. No expansion port like on their previous (5700g) model. And eGPU solutions would work well, but that itself costs almost as much as this unit. Perhaps I should look into SFF PCs instead of Mini PCs.
