But undoubtedly her most famous assignment was more light-hearted and entertaining – Nellie took on the challenge to beat Phileas Fogg by travelling around the world faster than Verne could imagine. Some people will tell you that there's only one female character in this book, and she's extremely flat. But that's not fair, either. Quite adventurous! And the story is based on so much factual information that it’s actually far more fun and entertaining than I expected. Phileas Fogg, an enigmatic bachelor living in London makes a gentleman’s bet with some friends from his club and sets off on an 80 day adventure. As the journey unfolds, so does the man, layer by thin layer, until his inner identity is revealed. Proof positive of slow and steady winning the race. Mark Brown adapted the book for a five-actor stage production in 2001. It has been performed in New York, Canada, England, South Africa, and Bangladesh. [24]

In the early 1860s, a magazine manager liked one of his adventure stories and gave him a contract to write similar stories for the next twenty years! The collected stories became known as Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires. His stories were of fantastic adventures with a degree of realism in the descriptions of events and scientific content - he was a pioneer of science fiction. He did lots of research for his books but occasionally made up a scientific 'fact' if it suited the story. History has shown that he had an incredible sense of what was possible - his imagined inventions have often turned out to be close to later real inventions. It was at least certain that Phileas Fogg had not absented himself from London for many years. Those who were honored by a better acquaintance with him than the rest, declared that nobody could pretend to have ever seen him anywhere else. His sole pastimes were reading the papers and playing whist. He often won at this game, which, as a silent one, harmonized with his nature; but his winnings never went into his purse, being reserved as a fund for his charities. Mr. Fogg played, not to win, but for the sake of playing. The game was in his eyes a contest, a struggle with a difficulty, yet a motionless, unwearying struggle, congenial to his tastes.

In 1963, a comedy film The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze starring The Three Stooges in the Passepartout role was released to exploit the popularity of the 1956 film and the Stooges resurgence in popularity that began in 1959.I read this book last week trying to catch up with my classics unread pile. And I am genuinely surprised with how much this book entertained me. I just cannot get enough of this book! Philippe Burgaud, Jean-Michel Margot and Brian Taves. "The Palik Series, Volume 6". North American Jules Verne Society . Retrieved 2 June 2022. This is a wonderful cat and mouse adventure, and at first I thought it funny that the police think Fogg has left on his trip because they suspect him of a recent bank robbery. But then, I had to wonder...why was Fogg ready to go on such short notice? Why is he so willing to spend so much money? Could he really be the bank robber? Of course, the main question is, Will they make in 80 days? And at times it seems they will, but there's always another hitch in the plans.
