Description

The Prismacolor Col-Erase Colored Pencils offer a remarkably smooth application. The leads glide effortlessly on paper, allowing for seamless coloring and shading. Blending – well, yes, the layering/blending is not what you may be used to with traditional colored pencil brands. These pencils are surpassed in that regard by their non-erasable counterpart. However, I do like that when you lay down color, it fills up the tooth better, though.

Pencils Ever (Are Going Away) | Muddy Colors The Best Pencils Ever (Are Going Away) | Muddy Colors

The Col-Erase is the palest and hardest, followed closely by the contemporary and vintage Verithins. Not surprisingly, the Caran d’Ache is the softest, which is true of most Caran d’Ache colored pencils. What did surprise me was the Staedtler, which was the softest after the Caran d’Ache. Most Staedtler graphite pencils are quite a bit harder than other pencils of corresponding grades, so I was expecting this one to be on the hard side, too. All erased easily and cleanly on both types of paper, especially with the kneadable eraser. Still, that’s better than trying to erase regular colored pencil. The eraser does erase cleanly and you could use vinyl white erasers as well. The leads are designed to withstand pressure and resist breaking, making them ideal for heavy-handed users or those who apply significant pressure while coloring or sketching. For those who want to expand a child’s creative imagination with other mediums yet still want the safety qualities of Crayola, then these erasable colored pencils make perfect sense. The price point on these pencils in my mind are very reasonable given, their intended purpose which I will cover next. Their Intended Use – Awesome for Sketching!

Col-Erase Specifics

Yes! They do erase but erase best on light applications. Trying to erase a heavier application will lift it, but it will not erase completely. (The same can be said for graphite as well, though.) They know how to balance both performance and price – ultimately delivering a product that is loved by many. Also, you can use more than one color when sketching to make decisions about color and shading for your project as done in my lotus sketch.

The Col-Erase formula allows for easy erasing and correcting mistakes, ensuring that adult coloring enthusiasts can achieve the desired level of perfection in their artwork. The pencils are made with a wax-based lead that helps prevent breakage during the sharpening process. I want to be totally fair to these pencils and just say this – even the company who makes them does not tout them as pencils that you can create beautiful colored pencil art with. Next, I tested them on a sheet of Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper, which has a very smooth surface. I think the Prismacolor Col-Erase would be perfect for school grade children, young children drawing diagrams or art whilst at school and likely to make a lot of mistakes and although as I have mentioned, any eraser will lift or remove colored pencil pigment just as well as the Col-Erase, I think in this example, the matter is convenience. If I were making a drawing in which it was important for the initial lines to disappear completely, I would choose one of the Verithins for being a good balance between paleness and visibility – at least to this artist. The Col-Erase is easily the palest, but I can barely see it! If I don’t mind the lines showing, I would choose the Staedtler or the Caran d’Ache, since they are easier to see (and I generally prefer using a softer pencil). Making a perfect gift for kids (particularly little girls), this set of 12 erasable colored pencils by Pilot comes straight from Japan ( same country where Pilot is headquartered). Not only are their results striking, but in the erasable colored pencil world, they also have one of the largest varieties (only topped by Crayola). While they may occasionally break when subjected to excessive force or pressure, they generally hold up well during regular coloring and sketching.

But one aspect that many artists and animators loved about this pencil was the ability for the eraser to remove any pigment off the surface. Let me tell you about my favorite pencil… now that it’s almost too late for you to get one of your own. The Scholar line of colored pencils is known for its smooth and creamy color laydown, allowing for easy blending and shading. While these colored pencils are not specifically advertised as erasable, they can still be erased to a certain extent. But what makes this a perfect gift for girls is the included pink case! While nothing really special, the nice little addition will be great for those who want organization while at school. Bottom Line So, this is exactly the reason why they should not be rated at 2/5 stars, nor compared to regular colored pencils. They are not regular colored pencils but are pencils great for drawing, that happen to be colored. Given that the lead is hard and strong, it lays down very smoothly and really gets into the “tooth” of the paper. It is not quite as soft as the premier pencils, but still feels creamy when you work with them. When laying down the color it was really difficult to tell if they were wax or oil based, the Col-Erase were neither soft and creamy or hard, but at the same time you could tell that they were not your average dollar store colored pencils. Incidentally the Col-Erase are a wax based pencil, but not as soft and creamy as the Premier. The Col-Erase Pencils excel in producing vibrant and rich colors. The pigments are bold, allowing for a visually stunning final result.

Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencil, 12-Count, Blue Prismacolor Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencil, 12-Count, Blue

finally someone gives actual info about the col erase. it would have saved me alot of time and effort if this post came out years ago. Basically i bought NPB colerase since i was told there was a shortage of the blue i always use for preliminary sketches. Idk at the time I first bought it from my animation lecturer he told us its NBP but apparently its just normal blue.

Conclusion

Now that I have researched them and read “from the horse’s mouth” (Prismacolor) that they are intended for design and illustration, I have done a “180” and really do like the Prismacolor Col-Erase Pencil Set pencils. Both artists use a blue pencil for lightly sketching the initial line drawing before inking (in Barry’s case) or using colored pencils (in Moore’s case). Their reasons are similar: While not invisible to modern cameras, non-photo blue lines are so subtle and pale that they tend to magically blend and disappear once the final medium is applied. In addition, lightly applied pale blue pencil is easily erased. Moore demonstrated another practical reason: If an initial drawing is made with graphite, almost all of it must be carefully erased before applying colored pencil. If any large particles of graphite remain, they could smudge, muddying the colors. The thin lead of these pencils makes them suitable for fine details, allowing adult colorists to add intricate patterns and textures to their artwork. The Col-Erase pencils are excellent for artists who prefer sketching and drawing, as well as those who need the convenience of erasable colored pencils. They are also suitable for students who want to practice their drawing skills.
