The Gaggia Cardona Prestige espresso maker seeks to bring the coffee shop experience to your kitchen. I didn't read the instructions before use with regard to one very basic yet important function, stopping the steam. I'd only glanced at the instructions, and it seem so simple that I didn't give it much more thought. I just assumed that since there's no physical steam dial, it would be a case of pressing the steam button to turn on the steam, and then pressing the steam button again to turn off the steam. The Magenta and Cardona espresso machine models are newer. They can do more than espresso and offer dozens of drinks options. Overall, the Gaggia Anima is easy to use and has some handy features (such as Temperature and Strength Control), and pulls a quality shot, especially compared to similarly-priced machines.

For an entry-level espresso machine, the Gaggia Anima Prestige is costly. However, the machine performs well and has features that justify the cost. The machine has decent storage space for both water and coffee beans. The 8.8 oz bean hopper stores enough beans to last you for a few days and the same goes for the 60 oz water reservoir. In case of an emergency — like realizing you’re out of coffee beans on a Monday morning — yeah, you can make do with pre-ground coffee. Alternatively, you might need to switch to decaf coffee on a Monday evening, so the bypass doser will definitely come in handy.

For those who just can't be bothered with grinders and gauges so early in the morning, there is the Gaggia Anima Prestige. At the push of a button, it grinds, tamps, and brews the coffee for you. It can also automatically steam and dispense milk if you want to turn that espresso into a cappuccino. Besides cleaning the milk dispenser and clearing out the spent grinds periodically, the Prestige requires almost no effort. It also lets you use fresh coffee beans, which improves the espresso's taste and makes it a better value than the similarly convenient pod machines. Before you start preparing drinks I’d highly recommend rinsing all removable parts. That’ll take care of any leftover factory fluff and dust. Once that’s done, fill the water reservoir and add coffee beans to the hopper. Oh, and don’t forget to plug the machine in – that’ll definitely help. With the Anima, you have 5 strength settings (vs three on the Brera) starting from the 1 bean setting through to the 5 bean setting, from at 7g, going up in one gram increments to a max of 11g. So 1bean: 7g, 2bean:8g, etc.The automatic milk frother takes extra care over the milk, ensuring it’s neither scorched nor overly aerated. For added convenience, you can remove the milk carafe and refrigerate it between uses. I should add that, with a little patience, the system works well — as it’s important to make adjustments in small increments. That said, my recommendation is to adjust only one grind level at a time. There are big, chunky buttons for one-touch specialties like cappuccino and latte macchiato, as well as a menu button and an aroma strength button.
