The paradigm shift that we see today in space activities is best encapsulated by the term ‘Space 4.0,’ and the ‘Moon Village’ concept seeks to transform this paradigm shift into a set of concrete actions and create an environment where both international cooperation and the commercialization of space can thrive. Other plans are for in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU), a term developed by America's National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for generating products using the nearby natural resources. Thanks to all the team who supported on the night to help create a truly magical experience..." Matt Green These and other design studies are part of the ESA’s long-term vision for lunar exploration. Alongside NASA, other space agencies, and commercial partners, the ESA hopes to create the infrastructure that will allow for a sustained human presence on the Moon. In particular, they have expressed the desire to create an International Moon Village where astronauts of many nationalities can work together and conduct science operations in lunar gravity. The idea was first announced in 2015 by Jan Wörner, the then-Director General of the ESA, who described the idea in an interview with Euronews. Next, they considered the habitat’s life support system and food production and how these could be part of a recycling system that meets all the astronauts’ needs. For the atmospheric requirements, they concluded that a mixture of 35% oxygen, 64% nitrogen, and 1% carbon dioxide (CO 2) at a pressure of 0.5 bar would be ideal for the greenhouses. This is slightly different from Earth’s, which consists of 23% oxygen, 75.5% nitrogen, and 0.06% of carbon dioxide by mass, and where the air pressure is 101.325 kilopascals (1.01325 bar) at sea level. With so many burnt-out buildings crowding the stage, you wonder where the performer will fit, but the musicians are strategically positioned among the metallic ruins, and Tesfaye himself spends much of the gig creeping up and down a long catwalk cutting through the middle of the venue, stalked by a troop of white-clad dancers who look like desert priestesses from the novel Dune. In the middle of the catwalk is a giant revolving female robot statue which lights up throughout the show and may or may not be a figure of worship for the Dune dancers. Finally, there’s a giant inflatable moon, completing the mixed-up stage concept. Once the first habitat is in place, the SOM team envisages additional modules joining it in turn, customised for specific functions such as science, manufacturing, food production and tourism – allowing the base to expand into a village, then eventually a city. O]ur PneumoPlanet design features by far the lowest payload per m 2 of usable area, the most effective protection from cosmic particle radiation, and the lowest energy requirement for the construction process and in operation. Additionally, it is the only concept of all published until now, that provides a complete ecological cycle for self-sufficient production of food and oxygen.” ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli completes some tests in the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, or BEAM, on the International Space Station. Credit: ESA/NASA One of the biggest challenges the CDF flagged is actually getting there. The habitat, including all its pre-fitted internal equipment, would have a mass exceeding 58 tonnes, which would be beyond the scope of currently operating launch vehicles.

Landing and launcher options

In short, the Inflatable Moon Habitat combines the benefits of low transportation costs, inflatable modules, ISRU, and a close-loop system to ensure safe and sustainable living on the Moon. Herzig and his colleagues conclude by stating that a prototype should be built on Earth that could be used to investigate various details and the components of the design. They specifically recommend that the performance of the electrostatic mirror foils, the life cycle inside the greenhouses, the material properties of the inflatable foils, and/or the transparent foil be the subject of investigation. The goal of the study was to develop a design for a lunar habitat that could leverage lunar resources – known as In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) – and achieve self-sufficiency. The concept comes down to three main steps, which would consist of: ICSA "We have used Table Art many times over the years and we're always delighted with the table centres and service that they provide! This time round we hired the exploding confetti balloons which were fantastic! We would highly recommend!" Harriet Hill

The study was supported through the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities. It came about after Pneumocell submited their idea to the Agency’s Open Space Innovation Platform, OSIP,seeking out promising ideas for space research from all possible sources. With an eye on the future, the habitat combines traditional life support systems with regenerative closed-loop systems, worked on through ESA's long-running MELiSSA programme, with the added advantage of allowing food to be grown in-situ. As Daniel concludes: "We were only working on the Moon Village part time, but the project has informed our thinking on large terrestrial buildings like skyscrapers and airports in both a qualitative and quantitative way. On Earth the demands aren't so absolute as space, but the experience offers ways to improve our design methodologies, such as selecting materials, integrated building technologies and minimising environmental impacts. We have a range of Large Moon Inflatables available for Hire on short notice. These giant inflatable moons are perfect for a variety of events and venues. These Inflatable Moon giants have an incredible realistic graphic surface down to the smallest craters and can be illuminated from the inside. These moons can also be lit from the outside which turns the moon into a wonderful and ultra real inflatable with the right setting. These moons inflatable is inflated by a larger powered internal fan with stronger lighting to fill the inflatable. Please note this inflatable can only be used hung from a ceiling or with rigging and requires a power source suitable for the wiring coming from the top of the inflatable. Available SizesDaniel adds: "Looking beyond the near term, we considered two options, one of which is NASA's forthcoming Space Launch System launcher, and the other is SpaceX's Starship, which would have no trouble with our mass requirements but is still at an early stage of development." Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) consulted with faculty at MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics as well as ESA on their habitat design study. It was inspired by ESA Director General Jan Wörner's vision of an international Moon Village developed through an alliance of private and public, space and non-space partners.
