Description

End of book instructions for card care and storage, preparing for a reading, framing a question, and layout. The one-card draw, two 4-card layouts, The cards measure 70 mm x 120 mm, which is a fairly standard size for tarot cards, they are neither overly long nor particularly broad.

Lisa Sterle is a Columbus, Ohio, artist who creates comics, concept art, and pop-culture illustrations. Her art is colorful, expressive, and often horror-tinged, combining her two favorite subjects, the beautiful and the macabre. The Modern Witch Tarot arrives in a beautiful, slide to open box featuring cover artwork from ‘The Magician’ card. Intricate magical symbols are printed inside both the cover and sleeve of the box, in which sits the cards and an incredibly cute little guidebook. The Guidebook However, some cards have multiple meanings that are not revealed in the description. The Moon card, for example, can represent anxiety and confusion. However, in this guidebook, it asks us to ‘ do something crazy.’I would also appreciate it if the guidebook contained the card keywords, as I think keywords are super useful for beginners. She also works with many kinds of Eastern and Western divination, including the I Ching (ancient Chinese text), tarot, feng shui and Four Pillars of Destiny (Chinese fortune telling). Every one of the 78 Modern Witch Tarot Cards represents a different idea. Award-winning artist Lisa Sterle brings traditional signs into the modern day with bright artwork that honors the variety, enthusiasm, and vitality of the new form of magic taking place around the globe. The Modern Witch Tarot comes in a very sturdy vertical slipcase that looks great. From the way the box is put together and designed, it’s clear that a lot of thought went into making this product. There’s even a piece of cardboard inside the box to keep the cards in place. The print quality is excellent. This style of artwork is unforgiving when it comes to printing mistakes making the quality control here all the more impressive. The images have crisp and precise lines, and the colours are solid, without bleeds or blurring. I lovethe depiction of the Six of Wands, too. This card is all about victory, success, and achievement and depicts a woman on a horse wearing a leopard print coat and ripped jeans. In her ear is a V earring, reflecting the card’s message. I love this touch and how it represents the meaning of the card. Image by Lou Siday

Each card of the Minor Arcana is illustrated and closely mirrors the representations in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, but of course with its own modern twist. The symbol for the minor arcana suits looks very familiar, but the illustrated scenes are fun to explore. They are all wearing modern clothes and styles, but the Rider-Waite style is still there. Even though both the descriptions and the interpretations are written in modern language, the divinatory meanings are not that different from what they were in the past. The descriptions of each card are fun to read and interesting, as they put forward new ways of exploring the cards. Each description is a little bit of guidance – telling us what the card wants us to do. Image by Lou Siday While the descriptions and interpretations are contemporary, the divinatory meanings are not dramatically different from the old meanings but updated for 21st-century life. And people of color are more than an afterthought; it’s a beautiful thing to see. These are real people, and they come in all sizes, colors, and ages. The Hierophant traditionally wears three layers of clothing to represent the conscious, the subconscious, and the super-conscious mind. The Modern Witch Hierophant wears a dress, a scarf, and a layer of tattoos, a beautiful interpretation of each layer, in my opinion. Several spreads are included – the one card draw, two 4-card layouts, The Four Powers spread and its alternative The Cunning Path spread, and the more complex 9-card Inner Wheel layout. Submerged #1-4. Co-creator, interior art and covers. Written by Vita Ayala, colors by Stelladia. Vault Comics.
