Phillips, Amy; Strauss, Matthew (December 16, 2016). "Nine Inch Nails Announce New EP Not the Actual Events, Vinyl Reissue Series". Pitchfork . Retrieved January 2, 2017. The lyrics "now you know/this is what it feels like" are the refrain for both "The Wretched" and leftover/outtake " The Great Collapse". Joyce, Colin (June 30, 2015). "Nine Inch Nails Release Instrumental Versions of 'The Fragile,' 'With Teeth' on Apple Music". Spin . Retrieved July 6, 2015. As my time on the album spanned over 2 years, it is difficult to describe a typical day, since that varied as we progressed. At the beginning, though, there were different types of days depending on how Trent was feeling. At this stage a lot of time was spent writing and creating songs. Obviously it is impossible for anybody to be in songwriting mode every day without going stale. So, to keep creativity up and vary things a little, we would have 'Art Days,' as they were referred to. This would involve forgetting about being tied down to creating within the usual 'song' structure and Trent would do anything that his mood took. Good examples of some things that came out of that way of working was "La Mer" and "The Day The World Went Away". Nine Inch Nails CD album ranking] (in Japanese). Oricon. Lipton, Mike. "The Fragile". Yahoo! Music. Archived from the original on January 28, 2013 . Retrieved January 27, 2013. There's a general theme to the album of systems failing and things sort of falling apart. In keeping with the idea of making everything sound a little broken, I chose stringed instruments because they're imperfect by nature. Although it may not sound like it, most of the album is actually guitar - and that includes the orchestral sounds and weird melodic lines. When it came to instruments that I didn't really know how to play - like the ukulele or the slide guitar - we were able to get some really interesting sounds by making the studio the main instrument. a b "THE FRAGILE: DEVIATIONS 1 2017 LIMITED EDITION 4XLP + HI RES DIGITAL - Nine Inch Nails". Trent has spoken about the period of time recording The Fragile as being a time where he was plagued by fear: fear of trying to grow and learn new things, fear of trying to top himself and his previous successes, fear of the mental and emotional place he was putting himself into through abuse of cocaine and alcohol, amongst other attitudes and activities. Fear, thus, drove a lot of the album, and that emotion speaks loudly in many places – where at first the aggression or violence might appear to be malice, upon a closer listen it reveals a protagonist (a Trent) who is wounded and lashing out in self-defense, who is naked and lonely and afraid, and who is struggling with understanding himself and his place in the world as pertains to his art and fame, as well as his complicated relationship with substances, and thus his own consciousness. The piano and bassline of "La Mer" is reused for "Into The Void". The piano motif is also played at the end of "We're In This Together" at a slower tempo. We're In This Together" from Apple Music features an instrumental of the album version, while Deviations 1 cuts the intro off and has "Missing Places" flow into it. Rapidly ascending, very chromatic guitar riffs are prominently featured in "Somewhat Damaged", "The Day The World Went Away", and "The Wretched". In one interview, Alan Moulder stated that the album started out with 173 different pieces or musical ideas, and the cover of Gary Numan's " Metal" had been completed when the album sessions began. [7] He also stated in a different interview that 120 songs were recorded [8], so it is likely that some of the 173 pieces were merely seeds of inspiration that were never developed into anything usable. The orginal large amount of song ideas was evidently whittled down before they even reached the demo stage, as Reznor stated in a 2000 interview that he demoed 47 songs, which he then chose from when deciding which ones to write lyrics for. Heard it in its proper context at last, “10 Miles High” comes across as the emotional and sonic key to the whole album: titanic in scale, unpredictably varied in its dynamic range, and absolutely annihilating in its despair and rage. a b Segal, Victoria (October 8, 1999).
