About this deal

One of the best azaleas for autumn foliage, with dark shiny leaves turning dark red as winter approaches. Large, pink-toned carmine red flowers in May. Height 75-90cm in 10 years. Japanese Mahonia ( Mahonia japonica)—The ornamental shrub has large, leathery leaves with jaggy edges. Clusters of yellow flowers appear and give off a scent similar to lily-of-the-valley. In winter, the green foliage turns red or purple.

Japanese azaleas are also susceptible to powdery mildew, a fungal disease that causes a white or gray powder to form on the leaves. Powdery mildew can be controlled with a fungicide such as Serenade Garden Disease Control. Japanese Azalea Harvesting And Storing:I’ve found that potted azaleas respond well to a twice-yearly feed with a slow-release fertiliser, ideally in pellet form. The History and origins of Japanese azalea are unclear. It is possible that the plant was introduced to Japan from China during the Jomon period (c. 14,000-300 BCE), but it is just as likely that it was already present in the islands.

Flower shapes also vary from hybrid to hybrid, from the star effect of pointed petals to smooth rounded petals, to highly ruffled edges on petals, or even wavy edges. The shape of the flower tube can be tubular, funnel-formed, or bell-shaped. Combinations of various petal edges and funnel shapes along with different flower forms, produce a variety of appearances for use in a garden. In addition, flowers may appear as singles, or two or three may form a truss of blossoms at the terminal ends of branches, producing a highly floriferous look. Often the flowers are so numerous that they cover almost all the greenery. I’ve found that the best time to move an azalea is after flowering. I would give it a light prune to shape and water well the night before. If the weather is hot and dry, I suggest locating the pot in a cooler location for a few weeks so the azalea isn’t stressed. Compost Japanese azaleas can be harvested from late spring to early summer. Cut the stems below a set of leaves, and then remove the leaves from the bottom half of the stem. Japanese azaleas can be stored in a vase of water for up to two weeks. Tips For Success: Hedgehog holly ( Ilex aquifolium ‘Ferox Argentea’)—Bright yellow and dark green variegated jaggy leaves give this large shrub a showy look to brighten up a winter garden.Transplant in spring or autumn if needed, lifting the plant carefully so that the rootball stays intact. Good varieties of azaleas
