Once upon a time, in a forest far away, there was a little squirrel named Sammy. He loved playing with his friends all day long but there was one thing that scared him more than anything else - climbing trees! Sammy knew he needed to collect nuts for the winter but every time he tried to climb a tree, he would get too scared and run away. Sammy took a deep breath and looked up at the tall tree in front of him. He knew it was time to put his new skills into practice, but he still felt nervous. What if he fell? What if he couldn’t do it? We cannot plan or control the weather but we can think about the best type of clothes to wear and whether we should carry an umbrella or a waterproof with a hood.

Before long, Sammy had reached the top of the tree - something that once seemed impossible! He looked down at all the nuts below him and felt very proud of himself. From then on out whenever any animal needed assistance getting up high into a tree or whenever someone felt too scared or unsure about anything -they’d call on little brave-hearted Sammy who now happily climbed tall heights without fear! So whenever anyone needed help reaching something high or overcoming their own fears, they knew who to call - fearless little Sammy! Later in the film, Verne attempts to return all the stolen food to the humans in an attempt to keep the humans from wanting to kill them after Dwayne (the Verminator) arrives. He gets in a fight with RJ that destroys all the food. Hammy - displaying a non-hyper attitude for once - is deeply upset when Verne gets in an argument with the rest of the family and calls them stupid. Hammy replies solemnly, "I'm not stupid". Hammy (or Sammy, as he first was) did not appear in the comics originally, as RJ and Verne were the sole main characters. It was not so much fun playing any more. Sammy could not find enough food to eat. He was cold and hungry. His nest let in the rain and he began to feel very miserable. The other squirrels only laughed at him and told him it served him right for being so lazy. They refused to help him and turned him away. Sammy became thinner and thinner. The temperature was much colder. The ground was covered with frost. Sammy would never survive until the spring.Sammy had learned his lesson. He kept his word and although he still enjoyed playing he made sure that he left plenty of time to plan ahead. Sammy is described as being creative and talkative and enjoys taking pictures of her friends having fun. She is an extrovert and loves art. Her favorite color is light blue and her favorite food are acorns. Her favorite season is Summer. She views the lives of her friends and guests at the lodge through her camera lens. No preparation is necessary but if used as a class presentation a group of children could mime the actions to the story. KS2 children could present the assembly for KS1. But as the days grew shorter and colder, Sammy knew he needed to collect as many nuts as possible if he wanted to survive through winter. He decided it was time to face his fear of climbing trees. The other animals in the forest couldn’t believe it either! They watched in awe as Sammy scurried up and down trees with ease. Some even asked him to teach them how to climb too! Hammy's big moment comes during the final battle, when the family is trapped inside the Hedge between Vincent on one side and Gladys and Dwayne on the other. RJ and Verne devise a plan to feed an energy drink to Hammy, which they had refrained from doing prior because he was already hyper enough as is. Once he drinks it, he goes crazy, and becomes so fast that time around him slows to a crawl. During this pause, Hammy activates the Depelter Turbo on Gladys and Dwayne, and grabs a cookie on the way out.

Whenever his friends suggested they climb a tall tree to collect some extra nuts for winter, Sammy’s heart would race with fear. He just couldn’t bring himself to do it. Many special occasions take a lot of planning, e.g. weddings, christenings. The children might like to help you make a list of some of these.
