This film on 4K UltraHD Blu-ray includes BOTH of the High Dynamic Range options available. That being: Dolby Vision and standard HDR ( HDR10). Shooting War” ( 1:28:05– SD) is a very lengthy ( 1 hour+) documentary hosted by Tom Hanks that focuses on war footage from WWII. There’s at first focus on some of the fake footage from the war that was assembled by actual movie studios. Aside from that, this features interviews with the soldiers who fought in the war, and features a lot, I mean, a lot, of embedded military footage from the war (World War II). This proves to be very, very informative and worth the watch after you’ve seen the film. A great companion to the film, for sure. Shooting War – A feature length documentary, narrated by Tom Hanks, looking at how WWII was captured on film. Ryan is very gung-ho, and while saddened at the news of his brother’s fates, wants to stay and help defend the last bridge in France (it was a very important strategic location). This leads to a showdown between the Germans and the troops trying to defend their bridge. Hopelessly outnumbered and with all odds against them, the movie ends in what is sure to be one of the best war movies made.

In terms of visual presentation in 4K UHD with HDR, this is now one of my favorite titles available to show off my 4K television (display) itself. That said, this will make any 4K display look spectacular and leave you, and perhaps those around you in awe at the amount of sheer detail. This is what perfection truly looks like, and I have to say job incredibly well done! Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World War II's historic D-Day invasion, then moves beyond the beach as the men embark on a dangerous special mission. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan (Matt Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in combat. With such a beloved title at stake, it's a huge relief to find that Paramount has done a stellar job of bringing Spielberg's masterpiece to 4K Blu-ray… Again, in comparison here to the original Blu-ray mix’s DTS-HD 5.1 MA, the Atmos is superior, in my own personal opinion. This earns every bit of a perfect rating and still carries the title of “ DEMO MATERIAL” in terms of audio presentations. This is one of the most in your face intense Dolby Atmos or atmospheric (including DTS:X) mixes that I have ever heard (to date). Once again, I want to emphasize something: Wow! Re-Creating Omaha Beach– If ever there was an iconic moment in the film, it’s the opening sequence that takes place on Omaha Beach. Basically everything you need to know is showcased here from setting the scenes, to choreography and everything in between.

Music and Sound – 15 minutes with John Williams on the role of music, and Sound Designer Gary Rydstrom speaking on battle scenes being more authentic without music and his research into most realistic sound possible. We say: An essential addition to your 4K movie collection. So what are you waiting for? Buy it now! Into the Breach: Saving Private Ryan – A 25 minute making of feature that covers all the bases from veteran and historian interviews to inspirations, training, themes, realism etc., some of which is covered above. Internationally acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg, is an unforgettable film achievement that has had a profound and lasting impact throughout the world. Saving Private Ryan” – of the many, many films he’s made – as discussed further above – proves to be one of mine as well as other people’s favorite Steven Spielberg films. This is the utter definition of a “ DEMO DISC” for the 4K UHD Blu-ray format. Pop this 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc in when you want to show off your new 4K home theater to your friends and family. That being said when it comes to it, I have to say this is a definite MUST-OWN 4K title!

About 48 minutes in roughly, whether “spoiler” alert, you’ll notice how Dolby Atmos mix delivers subtle use of the height speakers and rear channels to make you feel like you’re there. Gunfire sounds absolutely startling, especially unexpected sniper gunshots. 1 hour 6 minutes in echoes of the cathedral-like area bounce off the ceiling via the height speakers it seems, and around rear channels as well. I’ll stop here to avoid any actual “spoilers,” and to avoid writing an essay on audio. The film starts on perhaps the most important day of the war – the D-Day invasion of Europe on June 6th, 1944. We watch as thousands of Average Joes storm the beach at Normandy, only to be cut to pieces in a hail of machine-gun bullets and mortar fire. In the ensuing chaos, small groups of men manage to make their way up the beach. And faced with the choice of fighting for a chance at survival by breaking through the German lines of defense, or simply dying on the beach, slowly the American and Allied soldiers claw their way to victory. Audio here (on the 4K disc) is presented in Dolby Atmos format and even features the ORIGINAL Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that was included on the first DVD release. It’s worth noting that even the previous Blu-ray didn’t include that original Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. They just included it for ole’ time sake, I guess. It makes for great comparison as well, versus the modern Atmos.

Making Saving Private Ryan– A fairly standard, yet very interesting 22 minute feature on the making of the film. A lot of the set design is discussed as are shooting locales.
