I willingly followed where the author led, and in the beginning of the novel, alternately tried to understand Yvonne and at times even pitied her. It may be a risky ploy for a novel that wants to be taken seriously to flirt with the market-conquering strain of submissive female erotica.

A splendidly well-made courtroom drama, full of equally sharp turns of plot and phrase… Apple Tree Yard is very, very good. Dr Carmichael’s opening words, as the tale opened with her being transported to court with a jolt in a prison van, were: “Reallly, we are all just animals.As the first-person narrator, Yvonne, is at pains to point out, the episode is a complete aberration. Yvonne becomes aware that her lover is unwilling to reveal his true identity, but begins to thrive on their shared secret.
