The venerable Reserva Ocho has been around for quite a while, but the two rums it’s flanked by on either side, Anejo Cuatro and Gran Reserva Diez, were introduced as recently as 2018, in an effort to broaden the company’s aged rum offerings. The taste of slight vanilla infused with dark sweet honey leads to a hint of oaky notes – lingering off with a sweet and tantalising spicy finish. Obviously well crafted, and with a variety of flavors, I drink it straight over the rocks or with a little water.

Facundo began attempting to "tame" rum by isolating a proprietary strain of yeast harvested from local sugar cane still used in Bacardí production today.The rum carries a lovely light smoke, and a firm oak spiciness which provides foundation and character. Of course, Bacardi Rum is not made in Cuba anymore, the Ron Bacardi Company left Cuba in the wake of Fidel Castro’s plans to nationalize all private property and privately held bank accounts on the Island. It was the idea of Doña Amalia, Facundo's wife, to adopt the bat to the rum bottle when she recognized its symbolism of family unity, good health, and good fortune to her husband's homeland of Spain. The rum’s deep copper-amber hues trick the nose with its rich aromas of pineapple and apricot with ripe banana and nutty almond scents. It’s much more characterful than the Anejo Cuatro, and nicely fills in some of its gaps, with an alcohol presence that is mellowed considerably.
