About this deal

At home’ models are where consumers refill their reusable packaging in their own home, either via a refill-ready format or dilutable concentrate. Digital capabilities have powered two refill stations in Indonesia – developed by start-ups QYOS and Algramo – which dispense Rinso and Sunlight home care products. Consumer goods company Unilever has launched Cif ecorefill, a concentrated cleaning product that can be diluted at home within a refillablespray bottle,to reduce plastic use.

Once the original bottle of cleaning product is finished, users can attach the Cif ecorefill to the bottle to release the highly concentrated product into the bottle, which they then fill with water to dilute. Success depends on tailoring solutions accordingly, removing barriers to entry, and keeping systems as simple and affordable as possible. Consumers in Chile were able to purchase OMO and Quix from an electric tricycle that brought the refill machine to their doorstep. The product proved a hit with consumers when we launched it in Brazil, and we have since rolled it out to other South American countries as well as markets in the Middle East and Europe. To fully understand the opportunities and challenges related to refill–reuse models, the team analysed all of our pilots. By keeping a bottle of Cif and refilling and reusing it over and over again, consumers can reduce their consumption of single use plastic. That's okay, just add the right ammount of water by slowly filling up to the base of the neck of the spray bottle (630 ml).

The ecorefills are 100% recyclable once the plastic sleeves are removed and, by the end of 2020, the ambition is for all Cif ecorefills and spray bottles to be made from 100% recycled plastic. Sent every Thursday and featuring a selection of the best reader comments and most talked-about stories. In addition to this, the plan sees Unilever working collaboratively with partners to seek out solutions plus support and educate consumers on how they can reduce plastic consumption. We believe that widespread public communications campaigns are needed to clarify the benefits of refills – alongside smaller-scale campaigns for specific refill or reuse solutions. Refill and reuse options are an important part of tackling the issue of single-use, disposable bottles.

Government policy, including setting standards and providing incentives for refilling and reusing packaging, can create the right enabling environment for these models to flourish. Why do you think this is a better sustainability solution than refill pouches or dissolvable sachets like? We also see a critical role for governments, especially in helping promote innovation and encouraging investment. Unilever aims to produce all its ecorefill and spray bottles from 100 per cent recycled plastic by the end of 2020.
