Factoring in Sid Fleischman's win of the John Newbery Medal in 1987 for his book "The Whipping Boy", Paul and Sid Fleischman became to this day the only father and son authors to both win the John Newbery Medal. Fleischman has written over 25 books for children and young adults including award winners such as Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, Newberry Medal in 1989; Graven Images, Newberry Honor; Bull Run, Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction; Breakout, Finalist for the National Book Award in 2003; Saturnalia, Boston Globe-Horn Book Fiction Honor. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. I loved the creativity and ingenuity of how Wesley uses everything that he can to its full potential.

Paul Fleischman’s mature vocabulary and themes presented within Kevin Hawkes’ rich, elongated pictures suggest ‘ Weslandia‘ is a picture book ideal for readers of all ages. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! He enjoyed his land and was the happiest he had been in a very long time; he even earned the envy of his peers as well as some friends along the way. They include purposeful writing suggestions, links to the wider curriculum so that texts can be used across other subjects, key questions as well as spelling or phonics investigations. This is a picture book which encourages inference and has huge potential for relevant links across the curriculum, including to science, PSHE, DT and geography.

Hawkes perfectly depicts the story in his pictures and uses an immense amount of color throughout the book, really drawing readers of all ages into the story. While it's intended for younger audiences, like many good children's books/ picture books, older kids can pick up on the topics the younger ones missed. a.) Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e. Make a collection of books featuring invented alphabets, such as The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, or his Father Christmas Letters, a picture book precursor to the Middle Earth books that may be more easily accessible in the classroom. With the help of a little bit of magic and a lot of imagination and hard work, the world of Weslandia is born – and nobody (not even Wesley’s tormentors) can resist its appeal. I thought it was clever how this book used Wesley's garden plot to explain the development of agriculture, that led to industry and writing and so many other parts of culture. It is based on a number of predictors - average sentence length, average word length and word difficulty level. Kevin Hawkes’ artwork, with its vibrant colours and unusual perspectives, adds its own humour to Paul Fleischman’s honed and dryly understated text.

Now, being from a rather small town, I recognized both the names on the note, and I know that this person also teaches ancient civilizations in a different school district. But during the summer holidays, he has a brilliant idea: he’ll found a civilization of his own – in the back garden! I hope so, but quite often administrators purchase what they think we'll use rather than what we will use. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads. Passing his neighborhood’s two styles of housing -- garage on the left and garage on the right -- Wesley alone dreamed of more exciting forms of shelter. Give a time limit before sharing outcomes and award points for style, robustness, functionality and quality of workmanship.

This book is fantastic simply because it has captured a premise that is unintuitive and overlooked, and yet was as much a part of my childhood daydreams as any over-done stories of fairies, witches, or wizards. In pairs, ask children to come up with as many things as possible they have in common – likes, dislikes, hobbies, pets, clothes, places visited, etc.Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. I really enjoyed how the puzzle of his land fit in place with all of the new creations Wesley did, the art of this book was very vivid in color and well executed. All in all, though not quite what I expected, (the text read differently than in my mind and the illustrations were different too) I greatly enjoyed this story and would encourage it to be read by parents and children 8 AND UP. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods.
