The Scholar pencils are known for their smooth and creamy texture, which allows for easy blending and layering. Even if you want to highjack a few for your own personal use, their colors make them easy to standout in a page of crowded notes. While this certainly ranks low among the recent blows to our collective freedoms, I’m sure going to miss these pencils. So, if you’re used to sketching in graphite, you will welcome this advantage – it won’t get all over you or your paper! If you find an alternative pencil that doesn’t only come in a set, I’d be very interested to hear about it!

The Venus variety were in production during the 50’s and 60’s, so they would have the association with Disney and old comic books that I was after. But one aspect that many artists and animators loved about this pencil was the ability for the eraser to remove any pigment off the surface.

in a limited but workable range of colors, and don’t have the waxy feel of most colored pencils, which means they layer nicely with other media and blend seamlessly with ink, watercolor, and gouache.
