I have always wanted to play a musical instrument really well, if I was like Baby Brains, I would make ‘incredible electric music’ like him.

She explains to Greenpeace that she loves whales and thinks that the one she has spotted may be hurt. Her unusual will to remain calm and persistent in her letters was interesting as you would think she would gauge an annoyance of some sort from Greenpeace. The enthusiasm in her letters is brilliant as even though Greenpeace keep telling her it is not possible that a whale is in her pond she refuses to believe them. Greenpeace respond that Emily must be wrong as whales live in salt water, and so Emily replies that she has now added salt to her pond, every day before school. An unusual and rather lovely picture book, Dear Greenpeace combines delightful, light illustrations with sharp, intelligent text in the form of letters. It’s one of the loveliest celebrations of a child’s imagination, but also illustrated the connection between children and the natural world, and gently encourages them to make their voices heard.

He spent the rest of his time climbing trees, saving worms from puddles and worrying about the strange shapes in the curtains at night. The different animal characters are full of personality while the river bank setting is beautifully realised in Simon James’s watercolour illustrations. An elegant book… The illustrations are unsentimental and graceful and the story survives re-reading. One of Greenpeace’s first attempts to convince Emily that she can’t have seen a whale in the pond, is to point out that they cannot survive in fresh water. Use time connectives to retell stories and descriptive language for creating imaginary creatures and their actions. Why not laminate this knowledge organiser and leave it on the desks in your classroom for children to refer to as they're creating their own independent writing?Of course, Greenpeace think she’s telling a tall tale until…The empathy and care shown by the characters in the story is one for all of us to remember to give to our world, and ourselves. This entertaining picture book, with its rich illustrations, carries an important environmental message.
