It does not only look great but its footprint is small too, it's a bedazzling functional piece of art. It is packed full of features including 64mm flat burrs, single-dose loading, an auto-stop function, a tiny footprint, and quick and quiet grinding.

That said, a charming feature of the Ode brew grinder is how easily you can open it up for maintenance or repairs. From pulling espresso shots in hipster filled cafés, to roasting beans to perfection or tinkering with espresso machines - we've been there, done that. The Fellow Ode Gen 2 is a beautifully designed grinder that should definitely be a contender if you are looking for a grinder for manual brewing methods. There was a lot of hype in specialty coffee for the Fellow Ode release, and our team couldn't wait to get our hands on one.And with sleeping housemates, you don't have to worry about your grinder running longer than it needs to. It only happened to us once in four months of everyday usage, but clearing the jam required removing the faceplate with a screwdriver, emptying the coffee, re-aligning the burrs, and re-attaching everything. Installing the SSP Multipurpose Burrs was breeze, following along with Fellow's burr replacement video. Lastly, I compared the grind here, here, and here to my relatively well-seasoned Comandante at 5lbs. Again, I would be worried about the motor grinding this daily, but I'm excited about the prospect of grabbing an espresso machine and enjoying them once or twice a week.

Right out the box, even without reading the instructions, the workflow of this grinder felt seamless. Coffee extraction science is always a bit of a guessing game: we can use a spectrum refractometer to take an average reading of TDS in brewed coffee to assess brew quality, but that number is just an average. It all comes down, of course, to the quality of your coffee beans, and the Fellow Atmos vacuum canister will keep yours fresh and flavourful for longer.

Static can be a significant issue for home grinders: as coffee passes through the burrs, it builds a lot of static charge that causes chaff (the papery tan flecks more prevalent with light roasts) and grounds to end up on countertops—and can actually hold coffee back in the grinding chute. The Fellow Ode Gen 2 offers a major improvement in grind consistency and anti-static measures over the Gen 1, but it comes at a cost.

Let’s take a closer look at the details to determine if this burr grinder is a worthy sidekick to your coffee maker. While some users have complained that these recommendations aren’t all that accurate, particularly if you are using lightly roasted coffee, they are a good starting point. Included with the Opus Conical Burr Grinder is the Get to Know You Guide that walks through all of the grinder’s features. So it's not the number of particles of a particular size but rather the mass of the coffee found in grounds of that size. If you think you'll want to make more than a couple espresso shots a week, I'd probably recommend the Vario. With a more precise grind, we noticed that coffee ground in the Ode Gen 2 produced more pronounced flavors in brewed coffee, especially with lighter-roasted beans. The other frustrating thing was the catch bin had fins, that were supposed to aid in pouring the ground coffee, but ended up retaining a lot of grinds.

In stark contrast, Ode was designed to dominate brewed coffee— pour-over, French press, cold brew, and more. However after getting 2-3lbs of coffee through the burrs to season them, I am left with absolutely 0 retention problems with the knocker and RDT.Since this review does cross over into the grinder's application for espresso I figured I would comment here. This is because the spinning burrs will help kick off any residual coffee as you adjust towards a finer grind setting. The original professional-grade stainless steel 64 mm flat burrs offer 31 settings from AeroPress® to cold brew.
