About this deal

This really hurt me to read because as I said above, I hate that people have to come out and in turn be scared of people hating them. Summer Hayes reviewed Volume One in Booklist and praised Oseman's use of wordless panels to portray characters' emotions, although she felt that the illustrations were inconsistent. I didn’t even realise Nick had a brother until he was introduced and I didn’t expect him to be a huge d.

The webcomic series received more than 52 million views and the novel had sold more than one million copies worldwide. In August 2023, the novels were temporarily pulled from shelves in the Marion County, Mississippi library system pending review by its board of supervisors following complaints of their LGBT nature and inclusion of boys kissing. The characters of Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring first appeared in supporting roles in Oseman's 2014 novel, Solitaire, which features Charlie's sister, Tori, as the protagonist.I literally live on the lowest point of a huge ass island at the bottom of the world and to go overseas with the school you have to be 1) taking the language subject of the country you’re travelling to, and 2) put in an application, competing against fourteen other girls in your year level to go.

But coming out isn’t just something that happens once – there’s Nick’s older brother, and a school trip to Paris, not to mention all the other friends and family – and life can be hard, even with someone who loves you by your side. Oseman "fell in love" with the couple while writing the novel and decided that she needed to tell their story. Metaphrog also included the comic on The Herald's 2019 list of "The best comics and graphic novels of the year as chosen by comic creators". It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make up something larger, which speaks to all of us. In the meantime, we will be waiting eagerly for her new novel, Loveless, which will be out this year. Her use of the shape and organisation of panels to express feelings without words, along with their dynamic organisation help in keeping the story going and rising emotional responses that words would have probably left unattended. Of course, despite the very much needed positivity, Oseman does not forget about the latent fear of not being accepted and how hard it is to accept oneself, even if you are comfortable in your own skin. Now I would say, in an ideal world, no one would give a shit who you fancied and just accept the fact that everyone loves who they love. If any of you have seen The Saddle Club, you’d understand the above reference, and even though the show is no more, the theme song never leaves my head! Now in a gorgeous special-edition hardback: with an extra never-before-in-print mini-comic, beautiful endpapers and an exquisite foiled cover, this is an unmissable edition.

The series was later adapted into the Netflix television series of the same name also written by Oseman and starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke as Nick and Charlie, respectively. In a further review of Volume Two, Martaus reiterated her previous comments and said that the storytelling of the second volume "moves effortlessly from tearful poignance to laugh-worthy moments to stirring romance".But coming out isn't something that happens just once, and Nick and Charlie try to figure out when to tell their friends that they're dating. Brace yourselves for a pretty strong case of feels, because they have entered the honeymoon phase in full force and hearts are melting everywhere. Yet, these feelings are heightened to exorbitant levels in Heartstopper, for Alice Oseman makes the most of her masterful handling of non-verbal stylistic devices.

Regardless of how happy he is to finally be with Nick, Charlie cannot stop himself from worrying about the repercussions of their relationship. I know that most of my reviews are generally spoiler-free but I’ve been in a rut recently with writing vague reviews to avoid spoilers, so I’ve made this one with spoilers. Since then, not only has Oseman written two e-novellas about them—which, by the way, will be released in paperback form this year, matching the covers of the rest of her books—but she also started a comic about this gorgeous couple in 2016.

Contrarily to common misconception, as Oseman very poignantly highlights, coming out is a very tiring process which queer people have to go through time and time again: with relatives, friends, potential partners, and—the worst of all—nosy acquaintances. She initially released the e-book novellas Nick and Charlie and This Winter featuring the characters in 2015, but eventually realised that their story needed an episodic structure that was more suited to a webcomic or graphic novel format. Alaine Martaus also reviewed Volume One in The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books in which she praised the "simple drawings" which she says "keep much of the focus on faces and phones, reinforcing a deeply interpersonal connection at the heart of the story". I also find great enjoyment in reading about the experience of others around the world within their works of fiction.
