About this deal

She successfully draws together testimonies of native Parisiennes and those visiting the city, for whatever reason, on a temporary basis: 'American women and Nazi wives; spies, mothers, mistresses, artists, fashion designers and aristocrats. Others are emblematic courtesans, entertainers, and war profiteers who forged self-serving connections with the new masters, including ones who spied and informed on Resistance activities, facilitated the roundup of Jews for internment, or reaped profits from the appropriation of their businesses, homes, and treasures. It was an account of the pianist Harriet Cohen, who inspired the composer Arnold Bax when she wore a dress adorned with a single daffodil and became his mistress for the next 40 years. What made Noor Inayat Khan, an Indian-born Parisian and a pacifist, volunteer to work behind Nazi lines for the British Special Operations Executive? After the Lise London incident in the Rue Daguerre, for instance, we are told she was sent to Ravensbrück and her husband to Mauthausen.

There are arrests, denunciations, betrayal, fear, solidarity and every possible emotion through the war years. Les Parisiennes are a beautiful and very elegant collection of rag dolls, easily recognisable by their stylish outfits, smiley faces and velour hair. It’s structured by the year, from the beginning of the war through occupation, liberation, and the beginnings of recuperation. He looked at me as if I came from a different planet – that if I could use the word ‘choice’, I clearly had not understood. I was also impressed with the heroism of Jenny Rousseau, a prisoner who one day refused to continue with forced labor in a munitions plant as against the Geneva Convention.Inside a new luxury hotel located in Faubourg-Saint-Germain, this restaurant adopts all the codes of the luxury brasserie genre. Subtitled, “How the women of Paris lived, loved and died under Nazi Occupation,” this looks at the years 1939 – 1949 with the focus firmly on the female citizens of that great city.

She pieced together how four of her former agents were shipped to a small concentration camp, drugged, and thrown alive into a furnace. The original evidence has been well pieced together, and the chronological structure, which seems perhaps obvious in such a book, serves it well. I had to consciously readjust my reading style from my usual devouring-of-fiction mindset to more of an idea of studying. The majority were women, children, and the elderly because a half million young men were now POWs and thousands other men were already dead or headed to join de Gaulle’s nation in exile. The book takes an unflinching and sympathetic look at the roles women were asked to play in the war, and those they wrote for themselves. That’s a good thing, because it’s very impacting to get this plethora of stories from different women in various walks of life (although a little bit skewed towards the wealthier or more privileged side, in my opinion).
