Visconti served as Bowie's music producer for years, giving Morgen personal knowledge regarding Bowie's professional life. Bowie is apparently deeply moved by the visual arts as he experiences them while in West Berlin, and this influences his own painting style in his own renderings of oil portraits and related efforts in his other oil paintings. Moonage Daydream is an explosive mixture of previously unreleased archival footage of Bowie and live concert footage.

At the turn of the 20th century, Friedrich Nietzsche proclaimed that God is dead and that man had killed him. And the minute that it felt like the world was catching up to his wavelength, he would find another one to ride. As a rock star, Bowie was a unique artist, aesthete, insurgent experimentalist, gender dissident and unrepentant, unselfconscious cigarette smoker.

The film is divided into nearly two dozen "chapters" in the DVD release with the first hour covering Bowie starting in London up to his departure to West Berlin. Morgen blasts you with excerpts of rare, behind-the-scenes footage from Bowie's concerts and then shakes the speakers with pulsating music from Bowie's discography. Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is a 140-minute shapeshifting epiphany-slash-freakout leading to the revelation that, yes, we’re lovers of David Bowie and that is that. Enter filmmaker Brett Morgen 's riveting Moonage Daydream, an epic documentary that promises to deliver on all Bowie's eccentricities while not dishonoring the myth behind the legend. Bowie's third phase is covered by showing him appearing in his tailored Savile Row double breasted business suits and appearing in duets with multiple established artists such as Tina Turner and others.

Cobain: Montage of Heck is a 2015 American documentary that delves into the personal life of Kurt Cobain. Although Bowie's artistic career is most notable with 113 nominations, his spiritual journey is also vividly outlined. The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration and is the first officially sanctioned film on the artist. It is the first film to be officially authorized by Bowie's estate, [6] and takes its title from the 1972 Bowie song of the same name. We come into music docs with relatively mundane expectations of biographical details and sound bites, but Morgen isn’t playing that game from the beginning.

Coming to cinemas in September, MOONAGE DAYDREAM illuminates the life and genius of David Bowie, one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time. Why do the traditional thing of getting interview subjects who knew him or loved him to try and explain his importance to the 20 th century? Instead, Morgen relies on image, music, and editing to produce something that doesn’t bother to explain Bowie as much as channel his energy into a new form. After moving to West Berlin, Bowie speaks in clips and interviews about the extensive impact which the aesthetics of German culture in West Berlin had upon his artistic sensibilities.

Intercut with the fan footage are snippets of sci-fi B-movies, Bowie applying makeup, and what look like home movies of the era. Morgen received exclusive permission from the Bowie Estate to develop the film, the first filmmaker to receive such massive exposure to Bowie's huge litany of work. Told through sublime, kaleidoscopic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, Brett Morgen’s (The Kid Stays in the Picture, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, Jane) feature length experiential cinematic odyssey explores David Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey. In his third phase covered in the last part of the film, Bowie emerges from a two year hiatus where he remakes himself in the image of a suave musical artist often dressed in tailored Saville Row double breasted men's business suits. There is the inevitable Dick Cavett – who deserves a documentary of his own – also Russell Harty, Valerie Singleton and Mavis Nicholson, though my one disappointment is that Morgen didn’t include the legendary 90s TV interview with Jeremy Paxman in which Bowie tried to convince Paxman that this internet invention was going to be very important.

This is a movie about expression, and how Bowie didn’t so much seem like he was tapping into something that was universally felt as much as he was locating something we were about to feel. The film doesn’t cover Bowie’s personal life as such – although it touches on his half-brother Terry and his tense relationship with his mother. As the first work of film sanctioned by Bowie, the narration is carried out by the entertainer himself. David Bowie Film, Based on 'Thousands' of Hours of Rare Footage, Coming From Director Brett Morgen (Exclusive)".Other than a bit of repetition, I honestly never felt the length of “Moonage Daydream,” a movie that wants you to get lost in it as an experience more than the “teaching tool” approach of the standard music doc. And perhaps his adventures in other art forms, like Marcel Marceau-type mime or playing the Elephant Man on stage were slightly misjudged in that he had already absorbed all these things, was already drawing on that type of energy in his rock personae.
