About this deal

That’s probably not a deal breaker considering the limited 5G coverage, but it does leave questions about the phone’s longevity. The Moto G31 is solid and dependable, but despite a big improvement in the screen, it’s still hard to recommend over the competition – and that’s chiefly down to raw performance. A more expensive phone will have a more premium feel, and you'll also get access to extras that the Moto G31 doesn't offer, such as waterproofing, 5G and wireless charging.

Portrait mode is available for rear and front cameras and even allows you to adjust the level of depth with a handy slider – results vary though and you’ll need good lighting to get the best out of it. would be one of the biggest phones around but is very much the norm now – of course better screen-to-body ratios have helped a lot here, stopping phone chassis also getting too big. The ultra-wide one may help with portrait shots, but it produces ultra-wide shots that tend to look a bit blurry. The Moto G31 has a battery of 5,000mAh, which means it lasts a good couple of days without too much trouble, unless you're using it a lot. Detail and quality is generally decent from the main camera if you’re in good lighting conditions but it struggles when put in lower light situations – even if the 50Mp is 4-in-1 pixel binning to result in 12.A reasonably sharp resolution of 1080 x 2400 helps too, although the lack of a 90Hz refresh rate is a shame. It’s not new but I particularly like the double karate chop gesture to turn the flash light on and Peek Display means you can long-press on notifications on the lockscreen to preview them. The Moto G31 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset with 4GB of RAM, and while it's not the slowest of phones out there it's still woeful if you expect too much of it. Battery life is truly astonishing, which makes us think that the MediaTek processor must be remarkably more energy-efficient. It's well put together, it comes with a bonus protective case, and there's even a headphone jack so you can carry on using your existing wired headphones.

The multi-core score was slightly better sounding at 1,311, but could still only beat the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. As you can see from the Pixel 6 Pro comparison shot in the gallery above, if phone photography is important to you (especially in low light) then you might want to consider getting a more expensive handset. AMOLED FHD screen with a Hole in the Display, thus making your intense-gaming session and movie-watching experience enjoyable and engaging. It is possible to get okay-looking photos in dim light – actually quite an achievement at the budget end of the smartphone market – but they're blurred and fuzzy a lot of the time. A punch-hole at the top of the screen offers up the selfie camera lens, but it truly takes up the bare minimum of space - it's literally just the lens.Considering how much cheaper that is than the top-end flagships of the moment, we'd say you're getting a pretty good deal with the Moto G31 and everything it has to offer. HDR is not so good, in difficult lighting conditions camera doesn't perform so good but in good lighting condition it can capture decent pictures. Having graduated from Swansea University with a degree in Media and Communication Studies, and later with a diploma from Staffordshire University with a post graduate diploma in Computer Games Design, she's written for a huge number of publications, including T3, FitandWell, Top Ten Reviews, Eurogamer, NME and many more.

The Moto app on the main homescreen is where you’ll find a bunch of things to explore including gestures, display options and entertainment controls.

The rear camera is one area where you can tell costs have been cut: the Moto G31 offers a triple-lens 50MP wide + 8MP ultrawide + 2MP macro camera around the back, and a single-lens 13MP camera on the front in a punch hole notch.

It’s suitably thin and light and I like the Mineral Grey colour I’ve tested even if it is a tad plain. This is where Motorola phones tend to shine in terms of their value for money – so is this another budget Moto handset that's worth considering? In low light and at night, the Moto G31 tries its best, but it's here that the shortcomings of the rear camera really start to appear. Last year, we saw an absolute glut of Moto G smartphones, ranging from the G10 all the way to the G100.Working well as a point and shoot camera, the Moto G31 might lack the finer details and refinements, but it offers some easy-to-use software features that mean this is ideal for the average snapper. However, does the Moto G31 deserve another recommendation, or is it simply an incremental improvement as the name suggests? As mentioned earlier, the Moto G31 has a headphone jack which is nice to see but only has a mono speaker. If you're taking snaps and video clips to post on social media, which is what most of us will be doing, then this is a smartphone that's more than capable of producing – not bad for a budget handset. And as you can see, every other phone in the list is faster than both, which isn’t a good position for the newest phone of the bunch to be in.
