If by "feminist book" one just means "a book with well-written female characters who are complex and different and who have sex and it's normal and they as characters have feminist views" then sure, go ahead. Their feelings were suppressed so carefully in everyday life, forced into smaller and smaller spaces, until seemingly minor events took on insane and frightening significance. I genuinely like them and want them to do well, and if you like books with unsatisfying/ambiguous endings then this probably won't bother you too much. In the book, the storyline fluctuated too often between current and past tense, which I found a little confusing.

Sally Rooney co-wrote the television adaptation of Normal People which was broadcast on the BBC in 2020, and for which she was nominated for an Emmy award. I just could not stand reading about on-off relationship of these young damaged adults while such important matters like domestic abuse, depression and mental health in general were hugely overlooked. Sally Rooney set the books world buzzing in 2017 with her debut Conversations With Friends; Normal People is a girl-meets-boy story with a difference, interrogating the difficulties of sincere communication in a complicated, post-ironic world. Vogue Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there.

I've heard some reviews and such claiming that this is a big feminist book (which is a weird title to give a book that's not about feminism) in I would argue that it's a good book, but not necessarily a feminist one. It was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2018, as well as the Women's Prize for Fiction and the Rathbones Folio Prize in 2019.

She describes herself as feeling empty, like a void that has to be filled (and while she herself doesn't seem to realize it I think this may be a cause of being abused for as long as she was alive and having severe depression because of it) but she literally says "she was in his power, he had chosen to redeem her, she was redeemed" and like, that's the end. For a relationship that seemed initially to be about how being around each other was so freeing, it ends in control: in power, and who gives it. Sure stories are always about people but there has to be something plausible, connectable, interesting, less tedious? Conversations with Friends was shortlisted for both the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Rathbones Folio Prize, and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize.Confident and uncluttered, it conveys an immediacy and ingenuousness that drew me in and held me from beginning to end, which came too soon. It wasn’t the best book I have ever read but the author certainly captures the essence of young love from the perspective of both characters.
