I’m always thinking about what it looks like to be a young woman: about bodies and power, about friendships and family, about the ways we’re constantly looking to break free. Her work has been published in Stinging Fly, Granta and Five Dials, among others and she was shortlisted for the White Review Short Story Prize in 2019.

We loved the freshness and the spirit in the writing of ‘Blue 4eva’ – Saba Sams not only brilliantly captures the nuances of blended family dynamics, the jealousies and stresses, the efforts and the rejections, but she gives her young women credible and laudable agency and energy. Jasmine was still living in the house Stella lives in now, and Frank was staying in the flat that Claire and Stella had lived in all Stella’s life. When he tells her to send him nudes, she begins to stall for time as she contemplates the many possible outcomes. Her writing has also appeared online in places such as Litro, The Manchester Review, Arcturus, Forge, Tangerine and Granta.

It’s as if Sams worried that if she added some flair or really any specificity or distinction to any of her girls they’d be less relatable. Her fiction and non-fiction has appeared in Granta, the Stinging Fly and the White Review, among other publications.Originally from Brighton, Sams holds a BA in Creative Writing from The University of Manchester and an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London.
