Since simplified Chinese conflated many characters into one and since the initial version of the GB encoding scheme, known as GB 2312-80, contained only one code point for each character, it is impossible to use GB 2312 to map to the bigger set of traditional characters. Traditional characters are also widely used by older people and are likewise widespread on billboards, to a greater extent than in Singapore. Opening those little white boxes around the dinner table or in front of a favorite TV show is a special treat we all love. This is because the adoption of simplified characters has been gradual and predates the Chinese Civil War by several decades and some are used beyond mainland China to some extent.
