Smile by Raina Telgemeier is an autobiographical graphic novel and the winner of the 2011 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Teens. They subtly bully and tease her even after she tells them to stop, and pull down her skirt, then laugh when she starts to cry. Guts, released in 2019, about Telgemeier's stomach problems and her adventures in food, school, and changing friendships. However, since it didn't really have anything to do with the main storyline, and it was removed fairly quickly and easily, Telgemeier couldn't think of a way to naturally fit it in, so she just left it out. In 2014, Mark Tatulli wrote Smile into his daily comic strip Heart of the City, as heroine Heart Lamarr discovers the graphic novel on a trip to the library with her mother.
