Let us consider what new light may be thrown both upon the Covenant and upon the Book, by the one thought, that the Bible is the Book of the Covenant. But older than the Mosaic covenant was the royal covenant [of Abraham extended through David], which promised stability to the royal house.

Various dates have been suggested for the compilation of the Book of the Covenant, ranging from the period of Moses to post-exilic times. The Palestinian Covenant, or Land Covenant, amplifies the land aspect that was detailed in the Abrahamic Covenant.

Mendenhall also notes that a conflict arose between those who believed in the Davidic covenant, and those who believed that God would not support all actions of the state. Great interest and desires were felt by the elders respecting the Lamanites, of whose predicted blessings the Church had learned from the Book of Mormon.

A study of continuing importance is that of Albrecht Alt, who in 1934 published an analysis of the Covenant Code which hinges on the distinction between casuistic and apodictic law. It is inconceivable what loss the Church of our day is suffering because so few believers truly live as its heirs, in the true knowledge and enjoyment of its promises. The only exceptions to the casuistic formulation in this section are the prescriptions found in Exodus 21:12, 15, 16, 17, all of which begin (in Hebrew) with a participle. This revelation was given to the Church in consequence of some who had previously been baptized desiring to unite with the Church without rebaptism. While many of the promises towards Israel are still in the future, many believe that the church shares in the covenants in some way. The date that the Covenant Code was composed, and the details of how it found its way into the Bible, continue to be debated. The Mosaic Covenant was a conditional covenant that either brought God’s direct blessing for obedience or God’s direct cursing for disobedience upon the nation of Israel. In Genesis 15 and similarly in the Abba-El deed, it is the superior party who places himself under oath. In this early time of the Church, a unified pattern for the conducting of Church services had not yet developed.The codified laws of the Ancient Near E were a reflection of the common laws prevalent at that time in that part of the world. The following three revelations were given at this time to strengthen, encourage, and instruct them. This feature is due to the regular biblical setting of the laws as oral addesses to the people (see Greengus in Bibliography).
