This book would be perfect for children in Years 3 and 4, and the beautiful, bright images support the plot wonderfully, emphasising the beauty that can be found through nature, creativity and adventure. I also appreciated the fact that Blake explored an intergenerational friendship between the children and an elderly person in his story. Acclaimed British author and artist Quentin Blake, whose illustrations can be found in the work of such children's literature luminaries as Joan Aiken and Roald Dahl, spins a lovely tale here of two children who befriend an elderly neighbor, while on holiday, and engage in a marvelous game of make believe. I would recommend this book for use in Literacy, or just for a good 'Story Time' book at the end of the day.

This story could be used as a basis for drama within the classroom, encouraging children to think about different scenarios. This is a beautiful example of how powerful our imagination is and how we should remember that as we get older. As well as illustrating the books of others, including Roald Dahl and Elizabeth Bowen, Blake has written numerous books of his own.saw something absolutely astonishing‘ making the reader breathe in with anticipation as to what they will find on the next page. Battling their way through the dense 'jungle' of the garden, they stumble upon a life-size ship sculpted from trees and bushes. I always enjoy stories which highlight the importance of imaginative play in children's lives, and this was no exception. A delightful title, one which pairs a matter-of-factly magical story with colorful, appealing illustrations, The Green Ship is a deeply satisfying picture-book.

Two children find the Green Ship when they climb over the wall into what is more like a forest than a garden. It manages to capture all the imagination and wonder of being a child, while still quietly touching on larger themes that will resonate with adults. Is it the bosun and Mrs Tredegar garden, who are they, are they married or just the caretakers of the garden. The children find a green ship - a set of trees that have been crafted to look like a ship on the ocean. I think this would be a good story to use within class to get children using their own imagination and also getting them to discuss the characters. The illustrations in the book were beautiful and when reading the story I could tell that Quentin Blake has thought carefully about his illustrations to make sure the illustrations were describing the text well.
