Geography: Maps- look at the postman’s journey and plot different ‘landmarks’ or houses onto a template of the map. My Grandma read this to me every year when I was tiny, then I could read the easier words and she would read the difficult bits and then when she found out it would be her last Christmas she got me my own copy so I could continue to read the story each year.

Wonderful story of the Jolly Postman bringing Christmas letters to beloved fairy-stories' characters, with charming and fairly unexpected presents tucked in the envelopes as well. The Jolly Postman learning resource provides activities to bring literacy learning to life in the classroom, making links between the fictional narrative of The Jolly Postman and the real history of the postal service. This children's storybook is therefore ideal for using as a review of these genres of literature and as a means of helping children begin to explore rhyme and a variety of writing styles.Encourage students to use their own letters to find examples of the various parts of letters as they are discussed. Overall I found this book very entertaining and feel a class would enjoy the engagement and interaction of pulling out the letters and reading them, etc. We meet many different character such as the Three Bears, Cinderella (now happily married to her Prince Charming), Goldilocks and many more.

Janet Ahlberg (1944-1994) was a British children's book illustrator, and the co-creator, together with her husband Allan Ahlberg, of the best-selling Jolly Postman series. Additionally, we also have some great 'The Jolly Postman' activities and games so that you can make your lesson interactive. What other familiar characters has the Jolly Postman managed to visit on his travels, how has our Jolly Postman’s day been, and who has invited him in for a cup of tea (green tea at that)? After printing their text, students can illustrate the front of the cards using markers or other art supplies. Are there any significant land features which could be placed on the map, if so the children could be taught some of the representations used on real life maps?Your students can get involved in the making of your displays by contributing their own work to be put on the classroom wall. The interactive nature of this lovely book could help to draw them in and start to engage with the experience. Make copies of the Type of Letter Worksheet or prepare an overhead or chart paper to record students' observations. I think any small person opening this book for the first time would be delighted to find the treasures hiding inside and perhaps, as I have, remember it as an enjoyable reading experience. The wit and detail in all the "extras" (including a Humpty Dumpty jigsaw so you can put him back together again yourself.

I have very fond memories of this book from my own childhood, so this review may be a little biased! Children will love recognising their favourite characters, and will be so excited to open all the letters to see what is inside. Brilliantly designed with lots of little details to spot, this old favourite will be enjoyed time and time again.He vaguely remembered reading the original Jolly Postman, and knows most of the fairy tale characters. As an alternative to letter writing, use the interactive Postcard Creator to create original postcards. I found that this book was very engaging and interactive for children as it includes separate pull out letters which are hid/ tucked behind envelopes on the page. The Jolly Postman follows an unnamed mail carrier as he delivers letters by bicycle to characters from traditional children's stories that are well known in Britain.

This lesson plan follows a similar process, using The Jolly Postman as a read-aloud text that leads to genre exploration and serves as a model for students' own writing. This really makes you want to get started on writing postcards, lovely letters and making handmade presents to send to the loved ones.
