The tension when that dynamic is at the center of the conflict is, as my mother would describe it, delicious. Unfortunately he made a wretched first impression and had to bring out the big guns to get back into her good graces, aka her pants. I am so, so glad that I bought this book anyway because that really couldn't be farther from the truth. I felt so much chemistry between Lina and Max throughout the rest of the book, but not in the steamy scenes.

It's not something I've personally seen or would feel comfortable with in real life, but it has happened (we've all seen Jeremy Kyle or your own country's equivalent seedy talk show) and it is written well here I feel. Despite the better option right in front of her, an unexpected complication forces Lily to cut ties with Atlas, confront Ryle, and try to end the cycle of abuse before it’s too late. TBH I struggled a bit with the story till about 40%, the whole wedding/kidnapping plote was too messy.Three years ago, wedding planner, Carolina Santos was jilted on her wedding day (ahh how awful anyway but to happen a wedding planner? Still, this star-crossed couple can never be more than temporary playmates because Lina isn't interested in falling in love and Max refuses to play runner-up to his brother ever again. There were more than a couple scenes where I wanted to shout from the rooftops how much I enjoyed this book. I even was in a mood for a ridiculous romance and plot (billionaire, insta-love, exotic locale, kidnapping. But even the best laid plans can go awry, and soon Lina and Max discover animosity may not be the only emotion creating sparks between them.

I'm not mad because it's a romance book so I didn't have the highest expectations ever, but the dialogue was often cringy (especially during sex, oof) and the male main character was too much of an unrealistic goofball given his role in the book that I just couldn't really feel attached to the characters. Lina and Max’s relationship grows against a rich background of Lina’s Afro-Latinx culture, and readers will enjoy the complex cast of side characters. She has to pair up with Max on a marketing presentation to win this job, while Andrew will work with her competition.
