Research shows that adults taking more than 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily who exhibit symptoms should be evaluated for hypercalcemia ( 11). Serum concentration of 25(OH)D is currently the main indicator of vitamin D status. It reflects vitamin D produced endogenously and that obtained from foods and supplements [ 1]. In serum, 25(OH)D has a fairly long circulating half-life of 15 days [ 1]. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D are reported in both nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) and nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). One nmol/L is equal to 0.4 ng/mL, and 1 ng/mL is equal to 2.5 nmol/L. Homebound individuals; people who wear long robes, dresses, or head coverings for religious reasons; and people with occupations that limit sun exposure are among the groups that are unlikely to obtain adequate amounts of vitamin D from sunlight [ 62]. The use of sunscreen also limits vitamin D synthesis from sunlight. However, because the extent and frequency of sunscreen use are unknown, the role that sunscreen may play in reducing vitamin D synthesis is unclear [ 1]. Generally speaking, very few foods are great sources of vitamin D. However, the following foods are exceptions ( 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33):

Older people also often spend more time indoors. This means they get less exposure to sunlight, which is the best way to naturally boost vitamin D levels. Assessing vitamin D status by measuring serum 25(OH)D concentrations is complicated by the considerable variability of the available assays (the two most common ones involve antibodies or chromatography) used by laboratories that conduct the analyses [ 5, 6]. As a result, a finding can be falsely low or falsely high, depending on the assay used and the laboratory. The international Vitamin D Standardization Program has developed procedures for standardizing the laboratory measurement of 25(OH)D to improve clinical and public health practice [ 5, 7-10]. However, several older studies have found that a blood level of 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) could be even better for preventing fractures, falls, and certain cancers ( 23, 24, 25).

One cup of fortified wheat bran flakes contains 145 IU of vitamin D, equal to 18% of the DV. One cup of fortified crisp rice cereal has 85 IU of vitamin D, or 11% of the DV ( 32, 33). The amount can vary depending on the brand. One cup (237 mL) contains around 100–119 IU of vitamin D, or 13–15% of the DV ( 27, 28). Orange juice In a 2021 case report, a 64-year-old man accidentally took 200,000 IU of vitamin D per day because he misunderstood medication instructions. He showed altered mental status and other serious symptoms related to hypercalcemia. Cod liver oil is also very high in vitamin A, with 150% of the DV in just a single teaspoon (4.9 mL). Vitamin A can be toxic in high amounts. The safe upper limit (UL) for vitamin A is 3,000 mcg. A single teaspoon (4.9 mL) of cod liver oil contains 1,350 mcg of vitamin A.

The Finnish orthography using the Latin script was based on Swedish, German and Latin, and was first used in the mid-16th century. No earlier script is known. See the Wikipedia article on Finnish for more information, and d for information on the development of the glyph itself. For a severe deficiency, a doctor may recommend prescription vitamin D, which comes in much stronger doses of up to 50,000 IU. Your doctor may also consider vitamin D injections ( 1, 73). If you don’t like fish, taking cod liver oil is another way to get nutrients that are hard to get otherwise. Some wild mushrooms are excellent sources of vitamin D2 because of their exposure to UV light. Morels are a type of mushroom that grows in the wild. One cup of these mushrooms contains 136 IU of vitamin D, which is 17% of the DV ( 22).

While vitamin D deficiency may be seen in cases of obesity, further studies are needed to determine whether supplementing with this vitamin helps prevent weight gain ( 57). Anxiety Because vitamin D is fat soluble, its absorption depends on the gut’s ability to absorb dietary fat [ 4]. Fat malabsorption is associated with medical conditions that include some forms of liver disease, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis [ 1, 63]. In addition to having an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, people with these conditions might not eat certain foods, such as dairy products (many of which are fortified with vitamin D), or eat only small amounts of these foods. Individuals who have difficulty absorbing dietary fat might therefore require vitamin D supplementation [ 63]. People with obesity or who have undergone gastric bypass surgery One study in people with this condition associated lower vitamin D levels with more severe hair loss. In another study in 48 people with this condition, applying a synthetic form of vitamin D topically for 12 weeks significantly increased hair regrowth ( 48, 49). This is important because taking vitamin D and calcium at the same time helps your body maximize absorption ( 34). Recently, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of COVID-19, as well as an increased risk of experiencing severe effects from the condition. However, it is important to note that taking vitamin D supplements — at any dosage — will not prevent COVID-19 ( 2). Fatigue and tiredness

However, many experts believe the guidelines are far too low and point out that there may have been a statistical error in the data originally used to estimate the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) ( 15, 16). First, the liver converts dietary vitamin D into the storage form of vitamin D. This is the form that is measured in blood tests. Later, the storage form is converted by the kidneys to the active form of vitamin D that’s used by the body ( 1). In particular, studies tie low vitamin D levels to alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease characterized by severe hair loss ( 45, 46, 47).

The fourth letter of the Scottish Gaelic alphabet, written in the Latin script. It is preceded by c and followed by e. Its traditional name is dair ( “ oak ” ). Keep in mind that people who are low or deficient in vitamin D may need to take much higher levels than the safe upper limit to reach and maintain optimal vitamin D levels.Miller, Kirk; Rees, Neil (2021-07-16).
