Greg is also a regular voice on BBC Radio 4, and was resident historian on the science and history series THE ORIGIN OF STUFF, hosted by Katy Brand. In 2019 he wrote and presented a 3 hour radio documentary about historical comedy for BBC Radio 4 Extra called HILARIOUS HISTORIES in which he interviewed Stephen Fry and several other guests. He's made numerous other appearances on British national radio, TV, podcasts, and has written in numerous newspapers and magazines. On TV, he co-hosted BBC2's INSIDE VERSAILLES discussion programme for two series, and was one of the expert panellists on BBC2's THE GREAT HISTORY QUIZ (broadcast on Christmas Eve 2015), joining team captains Lucy Worsley and Dan Snow. he makes his subject matter accessible, entertaining and enlightening without taking away from its academic accuracy. his research is meticulous, unbiased and you can tell he's done a lot of it in the 4 yours it'd taken him to finish the book. A boarding school setting is always fun, and I thought this one was very well-realised. Mount Norton and the surrounding beaches were described in a way that enabled me to visualise it quite clearly in my mind, which made it easier to connect with the story as a whole. It is a recurring theme for Sue Wallman's books to take place in one primary setting, and this was one of her better ones. Greg is both a passionate defender and careful critic of the way in which the past is exploited for entertainment. He is an Honorary Research Associate at Royal Holloway, University of London where he teaches on the Public History MA course. He also teaches occasionally at his alma mater, the University of York, where he studied for 4 years before abandoning plans for a PhD to instead go into the TV industry.

Dead Famous is an exuberant exploration… Jenner expands these vignettes, weaving academic theory and rich analysis into his tales of stardom’s past. The result is not a comprehensive history — Dead Famous focuses largely on the U.K. and the U.S.— but a wonderfully illuminating one” Dead Famous: An Unexpected History of Celebrity from Bronze Age to Silver Screen, despite its subtitle, focuses mostly on the period between the early 18th century and the 1950s (and within that, largely people from the UK and US). Greg Jenner argues that celebrity as we think of it today first emerges in the early decades of the eighteenth century, enabled by various technological and societal factors, and that it's distinguished from fame or renown by its focus on the personality/private life of the celebrity and on the kind of economic infrastructure that grows up around them. I’m majorly disappointed. This book is not what I was expecting. The synopsis of the book really mis-sold the contents of the story and I feel as though I’ve been cheated. Later, a note is found in an envelope that had been sealed weeks previously that says that the victim will be dead by the time the housemates read the note and that one of the three remaining housemates will be murdered. The police have to catch the killer before he or she strikes again. When a new house mistress starts, her friend's artwork starts to get misused to reveal secrets about the girls one by one including a secret of Kate's... I also loved the romance, which was slow and buildable but so so pure, especially compared to other books in the genre which tend to shove in the love story as a bit of an afterthought. Without naming names, *some* high school mysteries see the main character falling for the best-looking guy, the coolest guy, like that whole cliché isn't totally overused and predictable. It was so nice to read a book where you didn't see the romance coming right away, where every character had secrets to hide, even Kate.

I adore a boarding school book. I think they're so fun and there is so much mystery with twists and turns! Trying to be the popular girl is hard at a boarding school. You live with these people for the majority of the year but, Kate is willing to do what she can to be popular. To get the guy she wants and to have the best last year before she moves on. But, she is hiding a few secrets, secrets from her past and someone knows. Someone knows and Kate needs to figure out who it is before it gets to late and before someone gets hurt. But, one night at a party is going to change everything. Dead Popular has so many of the ingredients of a book that sounds right up my street, but it just felt a little disjointed to fully work and some of the elements were a little rushed. The main protagonist is Kate - or Kate Lynette Jordan-Ferreira as she often likes to remind us - and the story begins as she embarks on her fifth year at Mount Norton boarding school, an institution that specialises in the Arts. At the same time, she and her friends have to deal with Ms Calding, their new housemistress who takes a very strict approach to following the rules. This is a lively look at history’s great and gawped at – and how they reshaped the world around them” I've just finished "Dead Famous" by Greg Jenner and thoroughly enjoyed Greg Jenner's witty writing style. The book presents a wealth of amusing historical anecdotes about famous figures throughout history, which kept me entertained from start to finish. I particularly appreciated the author's ability to make historical figures relatable and interesting, even when discussing well-known figures. The author was able to uncover new and fascinating facts about them that I had not previously known, which made the book an enjoyable experience.

Dead Popular is a YA mystery novel that revolves around prestigious boarding school student, Kate Ferreira. The story follows her as mysterious secrets begin to be pinned to a piece of student artwork in the common room, exposing secrets of the other students. When things take a turn for the worst at a party that Kate has arranged, the atmosphere gets serious and Kate fears her secret past will also be exposed. Darwin and other Seriously Super Scientists (formerly Scientists and their Mind-blowing Experiments) (2003) - Dr Mike Goldsmith David, the actor, has the first four lines of Hamlet's soliloquy " To be, or not to be" tattooed around his ankle. This allows both Kelly and the police officers to identify him as a porn star who starred in a movie in which Kelly was an extra. This threatens his reputation, as he wishes to become a serious actor again. They shouted at each other until I stood between them and screamed for them to stop. Paige stormed out, followed by a few of her crew, and Monro sat at a table, propping up his head with his hands” I don't know, I just feel really let down by this book as I was expecting a lot more. I was hoping that Sue Wallman would be a new YA thriller/mystery author whose work I could get into, but I’ll be a bit hesitant to read any of their other works.

Celebrity, with its neon glow and selfie pout, strikes us as hypermodern. But the famous and infamous have been thrilling, titillating, and outraging us for much longer than we might realise. Whether it was the scandalous Lord Byron, whose poetry sent female fans into an erotic frenzy; or the cheetah-owning, coffin-sleeping, one-legged French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who launched a violent feud with her former best friend; or Edmund Kean, the dazzling Shakespearean actor whose monstrous ego and terrible alcoholism saw him nearly murdered by his own audience - the list of stars whose careers burned bright before the Age of Television is extensive and thrillingly varied. Additionally, the author's use of humour throughout the book added a light-hearted and entertaining element. It was a nice way to read about history, and very much replicates Jenner's podcasting style. Our main character has a seemingly charmed life, and is returning to her exclusive school as house prefect. This brings with it its own challenges, and there is an added sense of unease created by the fact that we know someone is going to die.
