But, Merary," you may ask, "Does she ever tell you how to look irresistible?" Of course, she does! Get a personal image consultant (or just buy books from the What Not To Wear series,) get your hair done, put on makeup, drink water, eat well, exercise, just get it together, woman! Never mind that this is common sense, but I said it so it's valid! I'm not going to spend too much time on it because you should know this already (DUH!), just do it! But I will say I edit like a mother. I mean, I edit endlessly. I heard once that Hemingway edited every chapter 50 to a hundred times. And I'm like, "All right, well hot damn, then I'm like Hemingway, because I'm an obsessive editor." So I just forgo sleep. I have really bad habits that way. I'll just, not anymore, but for a lot of my career I just didn't sleep. Marie Forleo: One of the first books that I got obsessed with was Harold and the Purple Crayon. Do you remember that one? I loved the colors of the book, but I think the thing that really got me was the fact that the entire story was about a child who had the power to create his own world using his imagination. He wanted to go for a walk in the moonlight, but there wasn’t a moon, so he drew one in. And then after walking along this straight path for a bit, he realized he wasn’t getting anywhere. So he took that crayon of his and he drew a new, different path, which led to a lot more adventures. We need artists, entrepreneurs, problem solvers, writers, and more people like you to share your gifts with the world. Books on how to be creative can give you the inspiration, motivation, and — most importantly — practical steps you need to take to do that. a b Cari Sommer (February 22, 2012). "When You've Got it- Flaunt it: A Case Study on Marie Forleo". Forbes . Retrieved December 27, 2014.

Do you ever have trouble finishing what you start? Do amazing ideas come to you all the time but after the initial excitement wanes you struggle to follow through? If you're creative and ambitious, the answer is likely yes. Jayasri: I chose Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. I chose that book because I remembered reading it at a time, I was a teenager when I first read that book, and I had lost my father. Needless to say, it was a really difficult time. And this book is just so comforting. It’s a collection of 10 letters from the poet Rilke to another young poet, really giving life advice and so many nuggets of wisdom about the creative path and the journey. And it’s so much about going inward and trusting the process and trusting our path. So it was so comforting for me and I thought it really connected to the topic of creativity in a unique way. Why do I feel that this is manipulative? It is very much grounded in victim-blaming and no amount of "living in the moment" is going to remediate how I should feel about any misfortune. If I get fired from a job, am I really going to say "this is what I wanted"? No, I'm allowed to be upset! People are allowed to have negative feelings, no one truly is going to hold it against them. Sure, I understand if you are a negative person and treat others like trash, you are not going to be likable, but I get the sense that if you a person with trauma, Forleo is not going to have much sympathy for you. Change your mindset, it's NOT that hard!Allow yourself to really feel it without trying to make the feeling different than it is or attempting to get over it. Experience the physical sensation. Watch what's happening on an emotional level without getting lost in the mechanical thoughts triggered by your mind. I didn't sleep a lot throughout my career, but I ate so clean. I exercised. I was happy. I felt great. And so I was able to deliver. Let's see, what else? Happiness. Drama makes for really good stories, but not a great life.

I see that over and over with high quality stuff. So the people that I've seen who are the most successful are the people who've been teaching their work for a long time. So they own it, they embody it, they live it, they breathe it. A publisher doesn't have to worry that they haven't really thought it all through or that the arc won't work or that the ending. They'll buy the proposal with the sample chapters, but then the ending won't ever make sense because the person hasn't figured it out. It's like that last 10%. And do you experience it yourself, or have you seen it and on other people you’ve worked with? Together, we’ll us this one simple belief, everything is figureoutable, to activate our inherent ability to transform our lives and, by doing so, instigate meaningful change around us. Which is exactly why this book is in your hands right now. One thing that can I give praise is that there's not an over-saturation of toxic positivity and it is refreshing that she is more pragmatic than her competition in the genre (*COUGH* Jen Sincero *COUGH COUGH*). Sure, there is some stuff that echoes a lot from Rachel Hollis (who is not the most original person, I may have to add) and Tony Robbins (who seems to be her hero), but if I were presented with some ideas without association, I think I can easily attribute it to her.Doubt that you have what it takes to bring your creative vision to life? Grace Bonney’s In the Company of Women may be the inspiration you need. This is a big question, big question. I want you to think about the answer, although it might just pop out of your head. What would you say is the single most important habit for a writer? And if there's not one, if there's not one single most important habit, you might have one, give me your top three. Oh, okay. So two things. What comes through when you commit is magic. So I really think that the muse when she or he... I think it's a she. When she sees that you're taking your book seriously, she goes, "Ah, okay. Now we can trust her with the good stuff.” Because I really think we have to earn the muse's respect. I don't know if the muse is our unconscious. I don't know if it's God. I don't really care. I don't know if it's Fruity Pebbles. It doesn't matter anything to me or my dead grandmother.

Group: Are you mad? Are you upset? Are you sad? Come here, bae. Let me give you a hug because you act like nobody’s showing you love. Speaker 6: But I love that you said that it’s not easy to change your habits. To free up your time, you need to say no, disappoint people, disrupt social norms, ruffle feathers, have uncomfortable conversations, and dismantle a few long-held assumptions. Saying no can be a very can be a very powerful thing. This should go without saying, but I have to so everyone can see where I'm coming from: I don't HATE Marie Forleo. In fact, I'm an avid listener of her podcast, and, every once in a while, I watch her episodes from MarieTV. I happen to think she is a fun person and her content has some quality value. However, as demonstrated from my past review of her first book, there are some problematic elements in her philosophy that are so muddled with her inability to have a shred of empathy. It sounds weird for me to say because the point of being a life coach is to help others succeed, but it has become so common for me to notice that these life coaches can only see "humanity" in one group of people: The ones that give them money. I WILL reread this book when I am able to follow along with the prompts and make use of it. I did find it inspiring and motivating at times. I found several methods and philosophies that I'm looking forward to applying in the future, particularly when it comes to making career decisions. As an entrepreneur, I absolutely 100% see the value in Marie's work, and I am even considering investing in her B-School in the future. I just don't think it's a healthy book for anyone who is struggling with mental health or trauma without a treatment plan already in place, and it will be particularly harmful for anyone who also struggles with feeling that their productivity is tied to their self-worth.

My wife Alexandra has been a huge fan of Marie’s for a long time. I knew she was awesome. But… As I told Alexandra: “I had no idea Marie was THAT awesome!!!” They're seeing the latest books on the shelf. So every year, there's this new available market for relationship books. And it's like that across the board. I mean, we always have the staples, but there's always room for new. And it was like he was able to see the world through my eyes for the first time. The healing was outrageous. He told me it healed him. I know it healed me. It healed my kid. He was dating somebody at the time and he said, "Can I let her read it?" I said, "Are you crazy? She's going to break up with you." He goes, "I don't care. If she doesn't know the truth. Screw it." He gives it to her, she breaks up with him. I mean, to this day we still laugh about it. Marie Forleo | Helping Women Around The World Live Rich, Happy & Hot!". 2011-05-08. Archived from the original on 2011-05-08 . Retrieved 2022-10-17. Marie Forleo: Yes. So, one of my favorite things is to teach people to get on what I call the no train. My B-Schoolers know about this. So here’s what the no train is. So is anyone in here… are you guys addicted to saying yes and then regretting your choices? Like why the hell did I say yes to that? And you say… yes. Okay, good. You say yes so often you’re like, “Oh my God, I don’t have any more time for me, and why did I put this thing in my calendar?” Before you know it, your life doesn’t feel like your own. I’ve read and created Philosopher’s Notes on well over 500 books at this point. This is one of my ABSOLUTE (!) favorites of all time. I HIGHLY (!!!) recommend it. (Get a copy of the book here.)
