everyone apart from Davison has also been a member of Asia. Even during the Seventies, Yes were not as consistently Sherwood into the band to replace Squire was always going to be the way to go given his style, and he has certainly album of all times), with 1977's 'Going For The One' the last truly stunning album from the band (in my opinion), with Offiziellecharts.de – Yes – Mirror to the Sky" (in German). Consequently, I am not sure what I expected from the latest release, but the bar was set incredibly low, and I was sure Steve Howe: Fender steel, Fender Stratocaster, Martin MC38SH, Gibson ES175D, Les Paul Junior, vocal duet Connected is Prog with a warm glow, with plenty going on it is quietly uplifting with Howe holding these long high notes and some nice bass. Over in a flash.

In October 2021, the Yes line-up of guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, keyboardist Geoff Downes, lead vocalist Jon Davison, and bassist Billy Sherwood, with Jay Schellen guesting on percussion, released The Quest. In the same month Downes revealed that the group had already discussed ideas for a follow-up album, to which Sherwood confirmed in May 2022 that work on it was underway. [4] [5] Later in May 2022, Yes announced that White would sit out of the upcoming 2022 world tour to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Close to the Edge (1972), due to illness. White died three days later and Schellen, who had been handling most of the band's live work since 2016, took over on the drums. In February 2023, Yes announced that Schellen had become a full-time member. [6] [7] Living Out Their Dream" features an introduction that Howe considered reminiscent of The Rolling Stones, and said the song has a slight tongue-in-cheek lyric. He said that everything that the lyrics describe actually happened, whether it was something he read about or was present at the time. One specific incident that inspired his lyrics was a visit to a steak and seafood restaurant where a wedding was taking place. [9] Longevity in the music business is a rare thing, especially in the current age of immediate self-gratification. Having been in existence for over fifty years, Yes has seen it all. The fact that they’re committed to making new music in 2023 is certainly commendable, but they have a certain legacy and expectations to live up to. Arguably an impossible task. they would not be able to reach even that so when they surpassed it I must admit to being quite surprised. Bringing

Now, more isn't a guarantee of, well, more, but Yes has always had a deft touch with lengthy, meticulously rendered pieces, and Mirror to the Sky's epics - also including "All Connected" and Luminosity" - hold up to and uphold that grand tradition with symphonic ebb-and-flow arrangements, sweeping dynamics and virtuosic playing. And it says something that "Mirror in the Sky" breezes from one musical highlight to the next so deftly that you're wanting more, even as Howe and the FAMES Studio Orchestra, returning from The Quest, usher it to an end. great as we all like to remember (although progheads on PA have 'Close to the Edge' listed as the greatest progressive Ewing, Jerry (14 February 2023). "Drummer Jay Schellen joins Yes on a permanent basis". Prog. Archived from the original on 14 February 2023 . Retrieved 14 February 2023. The last 'broad' item is the album's overall production and sound design. Lots has been said regarding Howe's mastering of the helm, but I would say it's actually done well on this album. The post-Anderson era didn't really produce anything that sounded fun or fresh, but this sounds like a release of the appropriate year. I don't have a system to take advantage of the Dolby Atmos, so I can't really speak to that aspect of Howe's work. My Side 2 Trio ends with a wonderful acoustic Davison compilation – Circles of Time. Focused around acoustic guitar and his voice, it’s a moment that for me cements Jon D’s right to a place in this band. Not only can he do justice to the band’s legacy and history, but he has a vital musical contribution to make to its future, and this song is a great example of that. The same trio are responsible for Luminosity, a wonderfully ethereal song – the space and sound complimenting the astral lyrical subject matter. Early Yes always had a degree of pop sensibility in their influences, and you can hear that sort of vibe in the vocals and the chorus – Yes aren’t straying too far from their signature sounds, but equally aren’t trying to hit the pop charts. The orchestra also join in here, working particularly well in support of a Steve Howe steel guitar solo.

The Blu-ray editions include the album as Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound, instrumental versions and hi-res stereo mixes.

The vocals on Luminosity are quite ethereal, the song delicate and gentle almost in moments lullaby like but like the title it twinkles and shines.

We truly get along as people," says Jon Davison. "I feel like everyone's focused inward to the greater circle, concentric to the core of highest standards that define YES. It's a wonderful thing to witness and of which to play a part. I believe this reflects vibrantly in the music and the creative input that each one is willing to apply, not for the benefit of the individual, but for the greater whole that is YES." To start, Yes have always been a revolving door group- even the 'classic' lineup only produced a few albums together. Notably, this album features what has been the new-millennium lineup with Billy Sherwood (who was also on The Quest and Jay Schellen going in for drum duties with the passing of longtime member, Alan White. I will say I'm wishing there was more Downes on the album- not that he needs to be higher in the mix, but there aren't as many moments that really showcase his keyboard work as I felt could have been present. As they were wrapping up The Quest, YES found themselves with song sketches, structures, and ideas that were demanding attention. YES received unconditional support from InsideOut boss Thomas Waber, who encouraged them to keep going in the studio, months before The Quest would even go on sale. It was like throwing gasoline on their creative fire. When we delivered everything, and they were just getting the vinyl and everything into production for manufacturing, we were still very much in that creative zone,” explains Steve Howe. “That belief that Thomas had in us really meant a lot,” he says. This should be enough to put anyone off. If you are brave enough to look beyond that, then anything more than 15 minutes of this aesthetically empty, overproduced, glossy digital 90s sounding crap should be enough to make you suggest to Steve that he changes the group's name and stops tarnishing the Yes legacy. The group produced two versions of "Luminosity", having felt a new arrangement was needed after recording the first. [9] It features Howe playing an autoharp. [9] Its initial title was "Luminous", but it was subsequently changed after Howe, Davison, and Sherwood expanded on the initial arrangement that they had worked out and made it what Howe described as "a bigger tune".
