Hot dry compresses do work, but its difficult to make a hot dry compress at home without potentially contaminating your gauze or paper (microwaves are not clean environments, most people would put tissue on a plate to warm it up). Also this method is a two step process, as you must first clean your piercing to make sure there are no crusties present which would hurt the piercing during compressing.

You want a 0.9% sterile saline solution to clean your piercing with. It should be Sterilised, pre-mixed, and have a sterile delivery method like a can spray that ensures bacteria cannot enter the can once opened.Chamomile compresses are cheap and effective. Chamomile compresses are not sterile, but the natural antibiotic qualities of chamomile fight infection and as such it can be considered instead of sterile saline or hot/dry compresses. The only other potential risk with chamomile is a very low risk of allergic reaction, we genuinely have more clients allergic to titanium than chamomile, but its important to mention. NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Fine Mist 75ml or 177ml: The leading natural, vegan & preservative free sterile saline piercing aftercare Obtain some pure chamomile tea bags (make sure there is no real tea or caffeine in the teabags), steep a teabag in boiling water for a few minutes then fish it out and let it cool ever so slightly just to a point where you do not burn yourself, but you still want it to be as hot as you can stand. Wrap it around the piercing and hold it there under gentle compress until the teabag has gone stone cold. Repeat. Do this instead of one of your daily cleans. Avoid sandy beaches as well as pools, lakes, and baths. This means that you should probably wait to get your navel pierced in the fall when you have plenty of time to let your piercing heal before beach season hits.

Saline sprays are optimal for spot cleaning while on-the-go, and for cleaning practices in the later part of your healing. Part of the reason for this conflicting information is because everyone heals differently. While one person may experience an easy healing process with their new septum piercing, another might have a difficult time. The fact of the matter is that one healing practice doesn’t fit all, and in the end, you’ll have to figure out what works best for you. Avoid moving or twisting the piercing whilst dry. If any secreted discharge has hardened on the jewellery, turning it may tear the skin, increase scarring and the risk of getting fluid build-ups, it will prolong healing and could leave you more susceptible to infection. The long healing time is largely due to the fact that the abdomen sees a lot of movement. Even if you do your best to remain still, you’ll probably twist and turn a bit. This will move the jewelry within the piercing. Its location also makes it a major snag risk. Besides being painful, snagged jewelry can damage the healing piercing which could prolong healing times or worse.

Over the years, there have been hundreds of different piercing aftercare products, from sprays to soaps, to natural herbal products, homemade salt solutions, lotions and potions. You name it, it’s been done. So why do we find Neilmed so important? Surely they’re not the only sterile saline solution on the market? Possible Anti cancer effect – chamomile extracts can inhibit growth on cancer cells in the skin, prostate, breast, ovaries and prostate. Not necessarily useful for our piercings but an interesting study 🙂 While the navel piercing is a fantastic addition to any style, it also has a substantial healing time which could put a wrench in your summer plans. Before you get a navel piercing, here’s what you need to know about the aftercare process. The name isn’t meant to confuse; saline soaks (also known as saline baths) are simply a bath of saline solution in which you soak your new piercing. You conduct a saline soak in a few easy steps: If you’ve chosen a reputable piercer, they should point you in the direction of a good piercing spray. However, it’s important that you do your due diligence to ensure that the piercing spray they’ve recommended does not contain any additives. Can I make my own piercing spray?

Please do not remove or replace the initial piercing jewellery until it is fully healed aside from returning to the studio at the time advised by your piercer for your essential downsize. As a piercing aftercare company, we clearly believe that saline solution created specifically for piercing aftercare is the best solution for your piercing needs. But, there are many reasons why we came to this conclusion. Dispersing the spray for four seconds will administer 1ml, so a 177ml can will last just over six months when used twice a day. However, we suspect you would only spray for 2 seconds, meaning the can will last a whole lot longer!Spray the solution onto a piece of clean lint free kitchen roll and ‘soak’ the piercing for a couple of minutes. Then use a clean cotton bud dipped in the solution to remove any ‘crusty’ bits of secretion that should now be nice and soft thanks to the soak. Please try to ensure a piece of jewellery is worn in the piercing for at least 12 months after it has healed, if jewellery needs to be removed for any reason, it is advisable to wear a retainer to ensure your piercing does not close up.

Unlike saline soaks, saline sprays don’t fully flush the piercing. This is why it’s important to do a combination of both saline sprays and soaks during the first weeks of healing in any piercing. If you engage in activities that cause your piercing to hurt, you may set yourself up for a piercing that wants to migrate or reject. Be careful with any activities that severely irritate your fresh piercing, like certain yoga poses. When you mix your own saline solution, it’s very easy to get the salt-to-water ratio off. If there’s not enough salt, it won’t clean the piercing properly, and if there’s too much, it can irritate the piercing. Furthermore, without proper technology, it’s difficult to store your own saline solution in a sterile manner.Use of piercing aftercare solution 2 – 3 times daily is the most common suggestion of piercing professionals. Regular cleaning in combination with a healthy lifestyle, regular hygiene, and avoiding irritation of the fresh piercing is the best recipe for a healthy piercing. Avoid soap, shampoo, and chemical residues from showering/bathing. Be sure to rinse the piercing with clean water following a shower or a bath. Try not to put pressure on the jewelry. This means that you should stay away from tight clothing, and try not to slouch when you sit to avoid squishing the jewelry between the tummy rolls that the majority of us tend to have. Since saline consists of just salt and water, it’s safe to let the solution soak into your skin. Because you let saline sprays soak into your skin, it’s important to find a solution that’s all-natural and free from preservatives like NeilMed NeilCleanse Piercing Aftercare. When should I use saline sprays?
