About this deal

You can simply just use the ingredients above and skip the essential oils all together, but I like to add them for a scent booster! You want to make sure you are buying your essential oils from a reputable source. Not all essential oils are the same and hold the same safety values and concentration. We documented the color and fragrance of each dish soap. Adding color and fragrance generally means adding more chemicals. All dish soaps we tested were clear aside from Ajax (yellow), Palmolive (green) and Dawn Ultra (blue). We noticed Ajax uses what they refer to as a natural lemon fragrance, but we still aren’t sure about any added chemicals in that process as they aren’t listed.

Additionally, it serves as a formidable laundry detergent for both handwashing and machine washing, ensuring your clothes come out clean and fresh. Its cleaning capabilities extend beyond the kitchen and laundry room – Sal Suds is an excellent all-purpose cleaner for surfaces like countertops, floors, and walls, making household cleaning more efficient and environmentally friendly. My position is to do the research for yourself from credible sources (like those mentioned above) and decide for yourself! Simply having washing soda in your homemade laundry soap is great, however you can use it alone for those tough stains as well. Simply pre-soak a tough stain in washing soda and water to give it a jump start before washing. Dice a bar of soap into ½” cubes. Soak this in 4 cups (960 mL) of water (distilled or reverse osmosis preferred) for at least a day. (In one practice-run, I hit a busy life stretch and let it sit in water for three days. It still worked.) Diced soap in water looks a lot like tofu. Environmentally and health friendly: As awareness grows, more consumers are looking for ways to reduce their personal impact on the environment. Detergents, like dishwashing soap, may have chemicals such as 1,4 dioxane and phosphates that are harmful to our water sources as well as our health. Consumers have also found that certain chemicals used in cleaning products are disruptive to their health, potentially causing asthma, skin reactions, reproductive issues and even cancer.Allow the soap to cool for a few minutes before pouring into one large gallon-size jar or smaller containers, like quart-size jars. Make sure your jar(s) are heat-safe. If not, wait until the soap is cool, then spoon the soap into the jar(s).

Five years ago I went on a journey to removing harsh chemicals from our home and diet, one of the first things I needed to change was my laundry detergent. People always ask me, “Will homemade soap work as well as a store-bought product?” The answer, “YES! It will.” The essential oil will add a subtle fragrance, but shouldn’t be added until the soap cools as heat will cause the essential oil to evaporate. The Results: From Chocolate Stains to Clean ClothesIs Sal Suds safe on granite? What about Sal Suds on marble? Yes, Sal Suds is safe a cleaner for many surfaces, including finished wood, granite, marble, and stainless steel. 4 Easy natural cleaning products with Sal Suds Through all of this research, we were able to reduce a large group of dishwashing soaps down to a manageable 14. Finally, we donned our rubber gloves and went to work individually testing each one. We looked at how effective and efficient the different brands are, along with their price and appeal. How we tested Using Sal Suds in my homemade laundry detergent allows you to wash your clothes in hot water or cold water. And it doesn’t matter if you have hard water or soft. This is important because mixing vinegar and Castile soap is a lot like mixing oil and water – you end up with an ineffective, slimy mess! Every consumer has their own preferences. Some prefer a soapy clean smell; others prefer a lighter touch or no scent or color at all. Therefore, we did not score these features, but instead, noted them during our testing as additional information. Suds Test

Window Wash: (aka Sal Suds Lite) ½ tsp. (2.5 mL) in a quart (1 L) of water. Spray and squeegee. Follow with a spray of pure club soda, or half vinegar/half water, and squeegee. I talk a lot about the exceeding versatility of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap and Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds. There are so many overlapping uses. But is there any time in which they aren’t interchangeable? Yes, but just a few. Some of the ingredients of highest concern include formaldehyde, sodium borate, sulfuric acid and triclosan, which have been linked to vision damage, cancer and “acute aquatic toxicity.”Cleaning ability: Any detergent is going to cut oil and grease to a degree, but we wanted to make the test more difficult by looking at how well they cut both liquid and solid oils, as well as baked on food. In warm water (110 °F) with a teaspoon of liquid, we expect that oil and grease should dissolve and leave the dish squeaky clean. The soap should also remove dried on food without a lot of scrubbing effort. My sister and I both went through our first bottle probably 10 times faster than we should have (just because we loved it so much and were not used to using such a highly concentrated product). Liquid homemade laundry detergent is usually better in a front loader because they use less water, which means this recipe would work really well! Remove everything from the floors you need to clean (toys, plants, dog bowls, baskets, and furniture).

Product marketers have done a fantastic job at convincing us that clean is associated with a particular scent. If our homes smell a certain way, they must be clean. This simply isn’t true! Most of the scents used in cleaning products are simply there to trigger a “good feeling” and sell a product. Those scents don’t add anything to a home except a bunch of undisclosed ingredients (and some ingredients may cause health issues). If you want to add a scent to this homemade cleaner, because you love a particular scent in your home, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Personally, I love grapefruit, lemon, or lemongrass. But know that this scent is completely optional; it’s not required for cleaning purposes. Yes, this laundry detergent recipe is safe to use with septic tanks. All the ingredients in this recipe are biodegradable which makes it safe to use when you have septic tanks.

For the final test, we smeared a plate with a tablespoon of baked beans and baked it in the oven at 350 °F for 20 minutes, nearly burning the food onto the plate. Our test theory suggested that the burned-on food would require some scrubbing effort, requiring us to measure the amount of effort needed to thoroughly clean the plate. I have also included 4 recipes for cheap eco-friendly cleaning products at the end of the post. What is Sal Suds made of? No you can not switch those. If you read above I explain the difference between the two and they are not interchangeable.
