It was my first printed solo book. And though only a novella, once again, exceeded my expectations in its popularity. Got nominated for stuff. Won awards. Just so wild. At any rate, in the middle of enhancing and editing BGD, any thoughts to my alt-Cairo world were pushed to the side. I also had an academic manuscript to wrangle, and some scholarly book chapters to contribute. There was just no room to think on djinn or the like. He looked down at the fire wreathing his arms, devouring the flesh beneath his unmarred robes. Beside him, the woman shrieked, her death cries mingling into the terrible cacophony. Somewhere past the pain, past the horror, before the last bits of him were given to the flames, Archibald grieved for his London, for Christmas, for dear Georgiana and dreams that would not be.

A Master of Djinn - Tordotcom Publishing

Only the Pure of Heart: The Ring of Sulayman only reveals its true form to someone who has pure motives. My full-length novel, A Master of Djinn, was officially released a week ago from today on May 11 2021 by Tor.com Publishing. Though I’ve done this before, since it has (again) been a minute, this post is gonna recount the road that brought me here. Because mane, who knew? And I found it pretty hard to care for Fatma. She just wasn’t a very compelling protagonist, despite the swagger and supposed badassery. I kept feeling like I’m really observing her from the distance. And that focus on her suits gave it less of a swagger vibe, honestly, and more of a parody feel. Maybe it’s supposed to show that she’s grounded in reality, as she alluded to in the end, but it seemed a bit too superficial and distracting.

One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Siti was conceived as the result of one tryst her djinn father had with her human mother. The Marid snorted. “The word of a mortal? Empty and weak as water. There is no worth in that. Present me with something to bind. Something that makes your offer true.” Police procedural stories aren’t really my thing, but the amount of inventive fantasy woven into this one kept me riveted. At every turn, Fatma encounters some new supernatural terror: blood-thirsty ghuls, illusions, fiery Ifrit, and a man who looks more and more like a crocodile every time we see him. The novel occasionally dips its toes into outright gore (a djinn who’s been forced to cut out and regrow his own tongue, for example), but for the most part it’s good inclusive fun. Clark constantly finds new ways to challenge the concept of magic and what it means for the human residents of Cairo. What would it be like to share your city with hugely powerful beings who are capable of superhuman violence, or of making you see things that aren’t real, or even of tampering with your memories? The more we learn about this world, the more Fatma’s job seems of critical importance, even as she grapples with the limitations of the Ministry’s knowledge and of her own human abilities.

Motive Rant: Abigail explains why she had committed all her misdeeds aftr being discovered as the main imposter, laying things out at length. Better, it builds upon itself, staying nicely groundedClark reconfigures history with a keen, critical eye toward gender, class, and imperialism. An epic tale of magic and mystery, this is sure to wow. " - Publishers Weekly, starred review a b "SFWA Announces the Winners of the 57th Annual Nebula Awards®" (Press release). Khalid grinned before his face turned serious. “You do know what you’ve done? What you’ve granted them?” I only seek to serve, Mr. Dalton.” Moustafa spoke in clipped English, taking the gloves and folding them within his blue robes. Dalton grunted. “Every hand out for a little bit of baksheesh.

Archibald smiled tightly. Portendorf had been an English name for centuries. And it was Austrian, not German. But it was poor form to get riled by a jest. He offered greetings and a hand shake. Alongside her Ministry colleagues and a familiar person from her past, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city—or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems… Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, P. DJÈLÍ CLARK spent the formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. He is the author of the novel A...
