In February, 67-year-old former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon competed to represent Ireland in the Eurovision song contest with his hit, Hawaii, a love letter to his wife of 44 years, Nora Forster, who was living with Alzheimer’s disease (sadly she died on 6 April). In 2008, she set up Mudkiss, a fanzine and photography project, and today she photographs bands influenced by punk’s great youth roar as well as being house photographer at Manchester gig venues O2 Victoria Warehouse and O2 Ritz. And many retirees report feeling, stuck, blue, disappointed, and wondering why the heck they are so bored relaxing in the Costa Rica sun sipping Margaritas.

Not meeting up during lockdown is hard, so I had organised a whisky tasting online with friends last weekend.

This opportunity led to a successful career as a reporter, presenter and producer on various programmes across regional BBC radio and TV. Approaching retirement and frustrated with her job, Siobhan Daniels made a BIG decision: to start living life on her own terms. His digital course and signature live program are based on The DARE Method™, a pioneering and innovative program he created to help retirees and those approaching retirement change the way they feel about this important, but often misunderstood, life stage.

It’s become a cult hit and today Daniels, 61, encourages older Britons to embrace the self-actualising possibilities of later-life nomadism. On Club Day, 17th October, TV presenters, campervanners and Club Members, Matt Alwright and Annabel Croft will be at the show talking about their touring adventures, Bake Off star and caravanner Karen Wright will be sharing memories of her summer European tour and author of 'Retirement Rebel', Siobhan Daniels, will be talking about her travels as a solo motorhomer. With a global reach from the UK to the USA, Camerados is working in locations as diverse as colleges, prisons, hospitals, libraries, football stadia. He is skilled and experienced in guiding fledgling retirees along the road to a deeply satisfying and fulfilling future.

But think outside the box and try to age in a way where you’re living, not just existing,” Siobhan advises. She provides you with the common obstacles and then clearly outlines how you are going to overcome them.

This book came along and I’m looking forward to making a new and improved plan for the future based on what I am already good at and enjoy. And as we are emotional addicts, we can replace our past memories by imagining a new future, a new purpose, a new life. My work meant that I spent quite a bit of time with very senior people who were still actively working in their 70s.This was a sub-generation distinct from the 1940s and 50s baby boomers who came of age in a shiny new postwar social contract, complete with the promise of full employment.

The granny shift is a tender point for the over-60s with a yearning to self-actualise through travel, says Anne Hardy, a sociologist who studies later-life “snowbirds” (sun-seeking van and motorhome nomads).Anyone who is at rock bottom should read this and see you can get your life back if you are truly determined. But those who made it are doing interesting things, working as filmmakers and photographers and musicians and artists. Now, his life is all about making a difference with meaningful work; helping retirees and those heading for retirement live with purpose, passion, and prosperity.
