Alone in Imperium Nihilus, without the Emperor, the Imperium, or his sons, the Lion faces a terrible challenge. WarCom: Having written about the Alpha Legion and the Orks, and now the Dark Angels… do you truly believe that green is best? Also, I think the relationship between the two lead Space Marine antagonists had just that hint of queerness I’ve come to enjoy from Brook’s writing. The plot even briefly veers into recreating the legend of the Green Knight, although funnily enough, it's Zabriel rather than Guain who plays the role of Gawain. Baelor tries to get Zabriel on his side as well, but when he realizes he's making no headway with either of them, he departs in peace; though the Fallen are on opposite sides, they aren't eager to fight each other.

But the Lion should be smart, calculating and ultimately loyal to the Emperor and His ideals for the Imperium, and he is capable of humility and acknowledging shortcomings, though such humility is not one of his core traits.

The articlestates that’s not the case – but doesn’t elaborate on how, exactly, thenovel will update the canon. There is something quite heart-warming in this as a central theme of the story, a Father trying to find his sons so he can earn back their trust/redeem those who have fallen (or redeem himself to those whom he had wronged depending on perspective), and seeing his interactions with the Fallen and their many different forms was great. This attracts the attention of Thousand Eyes, who send a fleet to attack Avalus and capture (not kill) Lion. The Fallen the Lion meets, with one exception, were not high enough in the chain of command to know what exactly happened on Caliban; for them, the first sign of the battle were Lion's ships raining fire on them, which is why they have such hard time trusting him right now.

Distressed Dude: The Lion spends a significant portion of the book's climax trapped and in need of a rescue. Arks of Omen: The Lion finds him already on his way to aid the Dark Angels , but to find out how he got there, you’ll need to read The Lion: Son of the Forest .Combat Pragmatist: When the Risen fight Markog, he demands the strike against Zabriel he is owed per their agreement. Run the Gauntlet: At the end of the book, the Lion faces a shapeshifter that takes the form of each of his brothers in succession, forcing the Lion to fight them all one by one. There are still a few things left to do on the battlefield though, so the Arkifane takes to the field for his own standalone release, ready to lead his cult in person .
