About this deal

While Martin, who previously illustrated War Horse for the Oxford University Press, brings life and colour to each and every page with stunning artwork that manages to capture both the innocence of childhood and the valour of battle. There’s also a mystery over Private Shaw: did he die from his injuries, illness or some other cause?

It has been an honour to play a small part in the centenary commemorations and to indirectly support the work of the poppy planting initiative. Set in a bygone age, the carefree childhood of Ben and his best friend Ray becomes a distant memory when they join the army to serve their country. This is a great picture book for pupils to truly understand the symbolic meaning behind Remembrance Day and the poppy, portrayed through the dark and bright watercolour illustrations. Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. To mark the centenary of the start of the First World War one of the UK’s top creative teams, Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey, have dedicated their new book Where The Poppies Now Grow to their great uncles who fell at the Somme. One final element that really stands out for me in this book, is the importance of friendship and how it can withstand the most traumatic experiences; one that can be compared and contrasted to the brotherly love in Michael Morpurgo's novel, Private Peaceful.

His body was never found, but his sacrifice is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing Of The Somme. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Once the conflict was over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren battlefields.
