About this deal

Iron Hands’ The Flesh is Weak gives them the ability to ignore lost wounds on a D6 roll of a 6 and their vehicles count as having double the number of wounds remaining when you’re looking up their stats with a degrading profile. Compared to the last book they’ve lost the ability to hit on 5s with Overwatch, which is a downgrade but Overwatch is less relevant than it was, and they can still spend a CP to Overwatch on a 4+ if they really want to. If you’re an Iron Hands player, you likely won’t feel this change much. Overall, this is a good consolidation of what already existed – some abilities have been sensibly in-lined, a few others have gone to the pit of hell from which they were spawned (Master of Machines), and we’re down to a generally more svelte design. Making these points rather than CP is going to hurt a little in terms of getting things into lists, but on the plus side it’ll help getting to use some of the huge new selection of stratagems.

RIP Aggressors – they lost Firestorm and Relentless Advance, though their fists are now flat damage 2 and their guns can split fire which is… ok. Grand Tourmament 2020/ 2021/ War Zone Nachmund/ War Zone Nephilim/ Arks of Omen • Munitorum Field Manual/ 2021/ 2022 • Tactical Deployment Gift of Chaos : this is a very different power from what it was. It is a smite (18″) that can then do splash damage to other enemy units within 6” of the target on a 4+. 7/10 These three are separate datasheets – the Hailstrike, the Thunderstrike, and the Hammerstrike. They all share most of the statline previewed on Warhammer Community. The Hammerstrike, a close range tank hunter, you can see on the graphic below. The Stormtalon loses Strafing Run, which is probably fair enough now it doesn’t take a penalty to hit for moving. Like the Stormhawk, the skyhammer is now the default option, and can be swapped for two heavy bolters, two lascannons, or a Typhoon missile launcher.Mike: Finally, Chaos Marines are able to summon Daemons still, although this could change once Daemons receive their 9th Edition codex. Five Things to Know About Chaos Space Marines The Contemptor is now 9W – this is a buff for Iron Hands, as you can now have them benefit from Look Out, Sir! combined with March of the Ancients. I’m sure what everyone wanted to see here was ‘a buff for Iron Hands.’ A big change in this book is that three of the four god-specific “special” Marine units don’t appear in it, with only Noise Marines getting an updated datasheet. Do not despair, however – you can still bring your Khorne Berserkers, Plague Marines and Rubricae along. The Slaves to Darkness rule lays out how, plus makes Noise Marines and the Emperor’s Children work analagously to the special Marines from the other three god-specific legions.. Every unit in in an ADEPTUS ASTARTES detachment gains the Chapter Tactics ability and Troops choices in the detachment get Objective Secured. These are hold-overs from 8th edition, but (as will be familiar to anyone using the 40k app) they are now specifically grouped together as ‘Detachment Abilities.’ Similarly to doctrines, these apply to ADEPTUS ASTARTES detachments that contain only ADEPTUS ASTARTES units (though it can also include UNALIGNED and AGENT OF THE IMPERIUM units). Additionally – and this is the big new one – a detachment can only contain one CAPTAIN and up to two LIEUTENANTS. So if you want to double up on smash captains, you’ll have to double up on detachments (or take a SMASH MASTER, which we’ll talk about a little later). How does the Space Marines 9th edition codex holding up a year into 9th edition 40k? Well before we answer that, let us take a look at the book itself.

Inheritors of the Primarch now includes Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves. No Deathwatch or Flesh Tearers, for obvious reasons Don: This is the real winner of the psychic powers. These are the powers that the Master of Possession uses. Centurion Assault Squads get the ASSAULT LAUNCHERS keyword now (unsurprisingly) and are otherwise unchanged.

Look, forget what you’ve read about Tyranids, or Orks, or Necrons – Chaos is called The Great Enemy for a reason. The forces of Chaos – led first and foremost by the legions of the traitor astartes – are the foremost threat to the Imperium, and the big bad guy of the 40k setting. So if you like marines conceptually, but find it more fun to play the bad guys, the Chaos Space Marines are for you. Temporal Corridor – Blessing, WC5 now. You don’t have to advance but if you do your unit auto-advances 6”; on the other hand, you are completely exempted from shooting or fighting this turn. Weirdly it doesn’t stop you charging , just fighting, so White Scars can potentially use this to move 12” and charge and then just not get to swing – but still potentially fire across the table and take an objective. Presumably this will end up getting errata’d. Exploding 6s is always good, and this feels like a potent effect in the Combat Doctrines model, while still feeling distinct. There are certainly going to be some situations where you would prefer the AP boost, but the nice thing about exploding 6s is that it’s always good, so you don’t hit the failure cases of running into invulnerable saves where extra AP is irrelevant. As you’d expect, there are also a whole bunch of effects in the book that let units either participate in a different Wanton Act than the rest of the army, or activate multiple at once. Happily for everyone except Chaos players, GW did have the foresight to add a rider that if you’re participating in multiple acts that affect the same weapon type (e.g. an Assault weapon when carrying out both Massacre and Slaughter ) you still only get one extra hit per six. That means no completely nonsensical combos, but this is still a strong ability overall, and very welcome! And there’s a lot of units to choose from. Alongside the faction’s codex, GW also released the long-teased Paragon Warsuits, Celestian Sacresants (as shown on the codex’s front cover), and Dogmata, as well as faction-specific Battle dice and datacards. Though there’s no doubt we’ll have another dozen Marine additions in a year or two, the new units go a long way towards ‘completing’ the Primaris range – a Primaris army now has all its possible characters, a broad spread of roles for infantry, its own bikes, and the complete set of vehicle equivalents. At the same time, though, the old Marine units make huge gains against their bigger counterparts thanks to gaining an additional wound, and retain a great deal more flexibility in their weapon options. Whether we’re one step closer to the entire old range being squatted or whether Space Marines really stabilise around there being a hundred datasheets with big and little versions of the same units is an open question; our guess is that as long as people keep buying the little guys, they’ll stay relevant and therefore in production.
